About Maz

Hi, as a mum, (I have two adult children and one adorable granddaughter) I know how important education is and to succeed in this world, communication is one of the key factors. I am a local artist in my spare time, and used to teach art at our local primary school. As an English Language Tutor, I love seeing my students grow in their understanding of the English Language to the point that you can make them smile with a funny meme or joke. For children, I have puppets in my online classroom to encourage them to feel more comfortable in understanding a language completely foreign to them. For teenagers and adults, I always encourage talking about their day for the first 5 minutes, literally to help them feel comfortable using their English skills in a comfortable forum (even if they only know 2 or 3 words to begin with). I am looking forward to meeting you....Maz

English

Hi, I am ESOL trained. My place of birth is the UK and I have a love of the English language. Now living permanently in New Zealand, teaching English gives me an opportunity to help others master what can sometimes be a difficult language to adopt. I am offering 45 minutes to 1 hour online lessons, including evening and weekends if required. These lessons are for all ages, from preschoolers, to adults. My lessons will be fun and engaging as we get to know each other better, and lessons will be specifically tailored to your individual needs (as we all learn at different paces). For young ones we have flash cards and interactive online apps, including games and easy tasks, if needed. For my older clients, our lessons include learning basic sentence structure but also includes a lot of listening and talking to perfect communication skills vital to live in a multi cultural society. I taught in person at a local English Language Academy for a short period of time, Levels 1 and 3 to a mixed age group from 14 to working adults, but now enjoy working one on one in person, or online. I also design lessons for IELTS / PELTS students in preparation for exams for immigration purposes. I look forward to hearing from you...

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I have always had a love for the English language to be correctly spoken. In the UK my mother was a librarian, and used to proofread books before they were printed. She always instilled in us a love for the written word. After working briefly for an English Language Academy with students ranging from 14 to 50 in age, and 10 to 18 in enrolment per class, I felt far more comfortable in the private tutoring sector knowing that I was able to meet their needs as individuals, one on one, where necessary.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I tutor English Language to non-native students. The topics are two-fold. English language principles and language structure, pronunciation, reading comprehension, etc., but I then include what the specific interest and particular needs (if any) of my students and tailor-make each lesson around these components. i.e. I have a young 13 year old student interested in the animal kingdom and nature, so I create my lesson plan to include these particular interests to help build his confidence whilst still enjoying the subject matter being taught.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I guess my role mother was my mother, as previously mentioned. She now has two sons who also love the written word and who are both authors.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

The qualities required I believe are a love of the language. Patience and understanding of the journey your students are embarking on, and a connection with each student as an individual as they embrace their new journey (i.e. for some, emigrating to a new country and having to learn a completely different culture).
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

The only anecdote I can think of is ....always smile and try to understand when your students are trying so hard to communicate with you, but may not get it right. E.g. A young, incredibly shy, student of mine talked in front of the class about a "cwab" for some time and we had no idea what or who he was talking about. But the class smiled and listened attentively. We finally realised it was actually a "crab", but no-one let on about the confusion. So this young boy finished his explanation with confidence and a broad smile on his face (none the wiser!).
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

My only difficulty would be when I am approached to teach, but the student either lives too far for in-person lessons, or does not feel comfortable with online studying.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I love teaching. I also have taught art, and one other subject - but my passion is seeing the confidence of my students grow as they adapt to their new lives in an English speaking country. This varies from the youngest student being able to communicate better with their new friends at school, to older students, like parents feeling confident to go to "parent interviews" or visit the doctor and actually understand what is being said.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions) ?

What makes me a Superprof is my genuine concern for my students and their personal advancement in learning a new language. It makes me really happy to hear my students having the confidence to express themselves in a language foreign to their native tongue. To hear them make "jokes" in English or just debating with other students in English. Superprof (and us as teachers) gives them a "gift" of an additional education by means of becoming bi-lingual which is such an advantage to have in our multicultural world today. And it is rewarding for us to play a part in this
