About Joanna
I have a First Class degree in English from the University of Southampton, have QTS (outstanding) and taught for nine years at one of England’s top-performing state schools. My students go on to do very well, making several grades’ progress and some achieve 8s and 9s at the top end. Last year one of my students went from a 7 to a 9, getting the highest mark in his year for Literature and only dropping three marks across the two papers. I know how to push students at all levels, including the top end, but also try to encourage a personal enjoyment of the subject at the same time. Because I have examined for AQA, I know what they are looking for and can give highly targeted guidance to students. I am experienced, encouraging, friendly and enthusiastic, and best of all my tutees quickly gain confidence and enjoyment for themselves. I tailor each session to the student’s needs and spend a lot of additional time preparing sessions and marking work. My biggest aim is for my students to feel confident and successful. First I like to get to know the student a little bit, and find out what they hope to get out of the experience. I then will make a quick informal assessment of their strengths as well as their areas to improve, relative to the task and assessment criteria. I hope to encourage students as much as possible to be confident, skilful and enthused about English! Lessons are usually 1 hour. I have over 100 hours' tutoring experience and have worked with students across the whole range of age and ability at secondary level. My lessons are typically for secondary school and sixth form/college students, but I will also love to hear from anyone wanting help with essay writing at a higher levels since essay writing is one of my particular strengths.
