About Rhiannon
Hi! I’m Rhiannon, a fourth-year Medical Sciences student at Western University with a 4.0 GPA. I’ve always had a passion for both science and helping others, which is why I’ve been involved in academic mentorship throughout university. I am the president and co-founder of a student-led charity club, and I serve as an academic director in a Microbiology tutoring club where I organize and host review sessions and tutoring for university microbiology courses. These roles have taught me how to connect with people, explain complex ideas clearly, and bring energy and enthusiasm to everything I do. Whether you’re looking to improve your grades, prepare for post-secondary studies, or simply build confidence in subjects like biology, chemistry, or math, I’m here to help. I’m committed, patient, and genuinely invested in helping students succeed.

My tutoring approach combines strong academic knowledge with personalized mentorship to help high school students excel in science and math. I focus on building a deep conceptual understanding rather than memorization, using clear explanations, real-world examples, and interactive problem-solving to make challenging topics accessible and engaging.
My tutoring approach is grounded in both academic research and real-world experience. Drawing on strategies outlined in Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning, I focus on evidence-based techniques like interleaved practice, spaced repetition, and retrieval-based learning to help students not only retain information but also truly understand and apply it.
Interleaved practice is a method of mixing different types of problems or subjects in a single study session. It helps students develop stronger problem-solving skills. Once the student has an understanding of several topics, I rotate between question types, such as word problems, graph interpretation, and equation solving. This trains students to identify the underlying principles of each problem, not just rely on routine procedures.
Spaced repetition is another core pillar of my methodology. Instead of cramming before an exam, I encourage my students to revisit concepts regularly over time. I offer review schedules that gradually increase the interval between study sessions for a particular topic, optimizing memory retention. This long-term engagement with material is particularly useful in cumulative subjects like chemistry and biology.
Active retrieval is the practice of recalling information without looking at notes. It is also a key part of my lesson structure. Rather than simply re-reading or re-watching lessons, I ask my students to explain concepts back to me in their own words, work through problems on a blank sheet, or complete low-stakes quizzes. This not only solidifies their understanding but reveals areas where they may need additional support.
A typical session begins with a brief review of previous material using retrieval questions or concept-mapping activities. Then, we tackle new material using guided instruction, interactive problem-solving, and real-world examples to connect abstract concepts to everyday experiences. I also incorporate frequent check-ins to assess understanding and adjust pacing as needed.
What sets me apart as a tutor is my holistic approach. I’ve worked with students facing both academic and emotional challenges, and I deeply understand that confidence and mindset are just as critical as content mastery. I help students develop strong study habits, reduce anxiety, and build self-efficacy so they feel prepared and capable when it matters most—whether it’s a unit test, a final exam, or a future university course.
