About Carl
My Journey: For years, I immersed myself in various acting techniques, including six years of Meisner, Method, and many more. Despite my dedication, I often felt out of place, believing I was the problem. Traditional methods demanded rigid analysis, breaking down scripts in a way that felt disconnected. But my neurodivergent brain wasn’t wired for surface-level thinking—it was wired for deep exploration, seeking the intuitive ‘why’ behind every moment. Through years of training and experience, I realized that acting isn’t about forcing emotions or overanalyzing scenes—it’s about surrendering to the subconscious. I developed techniques that allow actors to trust their intuition, engage in deep character discovery, and connect authentically without intellectual overload. I now specialize in helping neurodivergent actors unlock their full potential, using methods that align with their natural strengths. My approach fosters organic character immersion, guiding actors toward performances that feel natural, effortless, and deeply lived. Hi, I’m Carl Drake, an acting coach based in New Zealand, specializing in neurodivergent-friendly techniques that work with your brain, not against it. My Approach: • The WHY Method: Surrendering to the Subconscious – Unlocking emotional depth through curiosity and intuitive discovery. • Story & Character Synthesis – Connecting with roles at a subconscious level for deeper, more nuanced, and authentically enriched performances.  • The Travis Technique – Deep character exploration through interrogation and lived emotional memory. • Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) & Body Language – Tools I intuitively use to recognize impulses and instinctive behavior in my students’ performances, helping them achieve more authentic, connected work. Empowering Neurodivergent Actors: I help actors discover that their neurodivergence isn’t a limitation—it’s their greatest strength. My methods encourage deep thinking, harness intuition, and foster effortless, immersive, and genuine character connections. Accidental Line Mastery: By immersing yourself in given circumstances, engaging fully in the moment, and trusting the process, you’ll find that lines aren’t just memorized, they become second nature and deeply routed into the subconscious.
