I will begin by assessing what parts of the subject the tutee needs help with. They may not need extensive help in all of them, maybe one or two major areas, a few minor ones and some that they are fully competent on.
In the session I will work on multiple topics. This means if something isn't quite getting through, we can move on to something more productive and I can reassess how to approach the point we got stuck on differently for next time, rather than use the tutoring time to figure out how to convey the subject matter effectively. This also means the tutee isn't likely to get stressed over one topic which will be unconducive to working productively in the rest of the tutorial.
When the tutee understands a topic, I will provide a few example questions to test them and make sure. At the end of the tutorial, its important to do a recap so I will provide them with an example from each of the topics we have covered to wrap up.
To measure progress I will periodically return to content from a few tutorials past and provide example questions. If the tutee is struggling again I will do a recap.
The most important thing to encourage learning is to help the tutee find an interest in the subject. They will be more likely to think about the subject outside of school, and perhaps even read around the subject which for me has unexpectedly supplemented my school and university knowledge.
