About James

In order to be an excellent teacher and tutor, it is so important to get to know your student. One of my strongest skills is establishing good rapport with my students by putting them at ease and learning what makes them tick. I mold my teaching techniques to my students' needs, skill levels and personalities. Every student is different, so a one-size-fits-all approach doesn't work. As I work with a student, I constantly adjust my teaching based on what I learn about him/her. Except for the very youngest students, I seek their input, which often proves invaluable. The best teachers and professors I had on my way to a very successful career as a writer/author were inspiring. I seek to inspire my students to meet challenges and experience the thrill of learning.

About the lesson

I have been tutoring students from 3 to 74 years old for more than six years. I tutor both remotely and in person. I can provide very strong recommendations from older students and from the parents of younger students. Among my specialties are teaching ESL students, helping high school seniors complete their college applications, and working with Elementary School students on all aspects of English including grammar, spelling, writing, and reading comprehension. Especially with younger students, it is important to make the lessons interesting and even fun, and I use a broad range of materials to keep them engaged. Among the approaches that set me apart from other tutors is how I teach my students the key difference between passive and active reading -- and show them how becoming an active reader makes them a better writer. As an Honors student who double-majored in History and Political Science at one of the nation's top universities, UC-Berkeley, I have advanced skills and knowledge to help students make rapid progress in those topics and related courses. Perfect! James has been a total game-changer for our family. He’s been helping my kids in 2nd and 5th grade, and the progress we’ve seen is incredible. He started by really diving in to evaluate where they each stood individually, which made a huge difference in his approach. He focuses on expanding their general knowledge, which has given them so much more confidence in the classroom and led to a massive improvement in their overall performance.
