About Etienne

Since I was little, it was always clear to me that I would focus on creating. The character of Rayman greatly influenced me during my childhood and it is on these bases that I launched into 3D animation at La Cité Collégiale (Ottawa) when I left high school, while having produced an infinity of comics before. After 2 years of studies and discoveries, I decided to embark on film studies at the Cégep de l'Outaouais (Gatineau), thus nourishing one of my related passions: video. After 2 new years of studies in the field, I went to Montreal, to the Centre NAD, to combine once and for all these two mediums: 3D animation and video. That's how, two DEC and a BAC later, I started Des Larmes de Métal project, a self-produced web series in live-action 3D animation. The film won more than 10 awards of cinema, animation and VFX in multiple film festivals across the globe. Today, I teach 3D animation at the college level.

The courses offered focus on learning Maya software (modeling, textures, rigging, 3D animation, visual effects simulation, 3D lighting, rendering, scene setup, etc.) and Nuke (compositing, rotopainting, rotoscoping, camera tracking, relighting, etc.). The courses also offer experimentation with a wide spectrum of software that affects different fields such as Houdini (visual effects simulations), Sculptris (digital sculpture, incidentally Zbrush), Fspy (creation of adapted camera), Photoshop (image editing), Premiere Pro (video editing), After Effects (compositing and motion design). Preparation: You will be asked to provide the 3D scene or an example of the work that will be discussed during the lesson at least one day before the date of the meeting. The lesson: We study the assignment/the scene/the project together. We see what we can improve, modify, or simply learn how this or that tool/function can lead to the expected result! Ask all the questions you need, that's what we're here for. Since I've directed a multiple times awarded 3D animated short film in live-action footage, as well as teaching 3D animation at the college level, I am in a good position to show you all the ropes of the job! The lessons are therefore optimized for students who are in the field, or those who are interested in it in a self-taught way, or who want to deepen their knowledge and techniques on the subject.

  • 1) When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

It came naturally to me. Since my youngest age, I've always been a major fan of the videogame character Rayman, which mixes superhero and fairy tales together. At the same time, I developed a passion for comic books, starring mainly Rayman and invented characters, in crazy adventures. This habit followed me up until this very day.
  • 2: What makes you passionate about your subject?

It is really tight with my youth and the connection I had while creating comic books. After high school, I figured the best way to make a living off this art was to make animation out of it, because animation is basically comic books panels that are playing at a certain framerate! And by doing so, I discovered in myself, also, a feeling for the production of original animated pieces, that allows me to tell short stories through a different and technical medium.
  • 3) What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

In my years of learning in school, either in animation or in cinema, I've always looked for that "waw" moment, when you realize everything you can do with the help of a tool or a software. The vast horizon of creative possibilities is so inspiring that it is precisely that feeling that I hope to give to students, so they are as equally inspired as I've been.
  • 4) Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you? Please explain.

Without a doubt, the "best" teachers that I had weren't the ones that got too theoretical. I do appreciate and understand the theory behind every practice, but the real learning in my opinion comes when you get the tools in your hands, and those teachers, who were showing their skills in real time, were proving to me that it was indeed possible to create efficiently. That's also what I try to give to students; concrete examples and constructive feedback on their work.
  • 5) What are your keys to success?

A mix of passion, obviously, and discipline. But dosed discipline. We tend to make ourselves feel guilty for not working on a project; in my experience; I've figured out that it's better to let the workload flow through us naturally and not fight the moment of basic enjoyment. So in my opinion, if a project really gets us, it's going to be easy to hop on often.
