Teaching Methodology and Techniques:

In my math and science lessons for primary to university students, I employ a hands-on, inquiry-based approach to learning. I believe in fostering a curiosity-driven environment where students actively explore concepts through experimentation, problem-solving, and interactive activities. By integrating real-life examples and relatable scenarios, I strive to make math and science engaging and accessible to learners of all levels.

Typical Lesson Plan:

1. Introduction (5 minutes): Set the stage by introducing the lesson's objectives and relevance to students' daily lives.
2. Exploration and Inquiry (20 minutes): Engage students in a guided exploration of the topic through interactive activities, experiments, or simulations.
3. Concept Development (15 minutes): Facilitate a discussion to deepen understanding of key concepts, using visual aids and concrete examples to reinforce learning.
4. Problem-Solving Practice (15 minutes): Provide opportunities for students to apply their knowledge through problem-solving exercises or collaborative tasks.
5. Reflection and Application (10 minutes): Encourage students to reflect on their learning, discuss real-world applications of the concepts covered, and make connections to future lessons.
6. Wrap-Up (5 minutes): Summarize the main points of the lesson, address any questions or misconceptions, and preview upcoming topics.

If possible, meeting at the North Vancouver Lynn Valley Library would be ideal for lessons. It’s a great, quiet space for learning, and I find it helps create a focused environment for students. Let me know if that works for you!

Find out more about Emma

  • When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

My interest in science and technology began early on, sparked by my curiosity about how things work and a love for problem-solving. During my undergraduate studies in Biological Sciences and Chemistry, I was drawn to research and education, which later evolved into a passion for mentoring and teaching. As I transitioned into the field of computer science, I became especially interested in how STEM subjects can be made more accessible and engaging for students through mentorship programs at the University of Alberta. I’ve always enjoyed helping others grasp complex topics and gain the confidence to apply them in real life.
  • What makes you passionate about your subject?

What fuels my passion is seeing the "aha" moment—when a student goes from confusion to clarity. Whether it’s helping someone understand a tough math concept, design a science fair project, or debug a piece of code, I love being part of that learning journey. I’m also passionate about bridging gaps in education—making STEM subjects inclusive, creative, and relevant for all kinds of learners. I believe knowledge is empowering, and I’m excited to help others build that foundation.
  • What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

Tutoring is deeply rewarding because it allows me to build meaningful, one-on-one connections with students. I tailor my lessons to their needs, interests, and goals, whether that’s getting ahead in class, preparing for university admissions, or just developing a deeper understanding of the material. What makes me a “Superprof” is my ability to combine academic rigor with encouragement and creativity. I’ve worked with a diverse range of populations including neurodivergent students, from young learners to adults, and my background in both science and technology lets me bring a multidimensional approach to teaching.
  • Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you? Please explain.

Yes—several! One that stands out is my high school chemistry teacher, who not only explained difficult topics clearly but also made learning fun and relevant. She encouraged us to ask questions, think critically, and challenge ourselves. Later, in university, I had a research mentor who helped me see the beauty in scientific discovery and the importance of persistence. These role models taught me the value of compassion, clarity, and curiosity—values I try to bring to every tutoring session.
  • What are your keys to success?

Adaptability, empathy, and consistency. Every student learns differently, so being able to adapt my teaching style is key. I also believe empathy is essential—understanding where a student is coming from helps me guide them more effectively. Finally, consistency and structure build trust and ensure steady progress. I combine these with subject expertise, strong communication skills, and a genuine desire to help others succeed.
