About Nicholas
I'm a native Angeleno and lifelong musician with decades of experience across bass, folkloric percussion, movement arts, and community music. I've been teaching bass online since the pandemic, and have since expanded my offerings to include music production and DAW fundamentals — because knowing how to record and shape your own sound is part of being a complete musician today.
My professional background is in social services — supported living, foster care, employment support — where I specialized in working with young people with complex behavioral profiles, ADHD, and autism. That work taught me something I've carried into everything since: if you build the right environment and the right supports for a person, they can succeed and thrive well beyond what anyone expected of them. That's not a philosophy I read in a book. It's what I watched happen, over and over.
I'm also autistic and manage ADHD myself, which means I don't just understand these experiences professionally — I've had to build real systems to make my own creative and working life function. That personal work informs how I show up for every student.
I'm currently developing community music programs in East LA, where music has always been about more than performance — it's been about belonging, identity, and collective voice.

Every student I work with gets a lesson shaped around how they actually think and learn — not a one-size curriculum handed down from a syllabus. That means we figure out not just what to work on, but how to make it something you'll actually show up for and follow through on. The best lesson plan is the one that fits your life, your mind, and your relationship with the instrument right now.
My background spans bass, composition, music theory, and DAW production, and while my knowledge of western theory is thorough, my playing is just as deeply informed by decades in folkloric music spaces — primarily Afro-Brazilian percussion with forays into Afro-Caribbean traditions. I hear bass as a rhythm instrument and musical connective tissue first, which shapes everything about how I teach across genres.
I bring years of experience and a sincere passion for working with people of all abilities, whatever their age, including neurodivergent learners and adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities. An extensive background in social services — skills training, supported living, employment support, and universal design for learning — means I come to teaching with a real clinical and relational toolkit, not just good intentions. Every student gets a structure that's built for them, not adapted from someone else's template.
For adults returning to bass after years away — welcome back. We'll meet you exactly where you are, rebuild your footing, and reconnect you to why you loved it in the first place. No judgment about the gap.
For students who learn differently — whether that's a kid for whom bass is becoming a special interest, an adult with a developmental disability, or anyone whose brain just doesn't thrive in a conventional lesson format — sessions are structured but flexible. Built-in breaks, varied pacing, and genuine investment in making music feel like yours. No one gets a cookie-cutter hour and lesson formats adjust as we discover what works and what is a struggle. Technique, theory, composition, and production are all on the table, always in service of the music you actually want to make.
