About Hannah
Hi! I'm Hannah, and I've spent the last three years tutoring students in a variety of subjects- primarily math, English, and science courses. I have helped students prepare for standardized tests like the ICEE and SAT and improve the grades.
I am an undergraduate at Washington University where I am one of the academic mentors. I have hundreds of hours of training and even more hours of experience. As an academic mentor, I met weekly with students and help them with their course material.
I enjoy helping students have that Aha! moment. In particular, I love approaching concepts from new directions, trying to help a student understand a concept in the way that is best for them.
I love learning, and I've always wanted to help others learn as well. I have two younger siblings, and my passion for teaching began with helping them with their homework. From there, I went on to tutor in highschool independently before applying to and being selected for a tutoring program at my university.
I am a junior in college at Washington University in St. Louis, one of the top 20 colleges in the US. At WashU, I am a paid academic mentor and have taken 4 courses on academic mentoring. Even before college, I worked as a tutor for many students in Houston.
I am a pre-med biology major with writing and mathematics minors. I have taken much of the material these students are learning recently enough that the experience they're going through is both something I can relate to and can help guide them through.

Before beginning to work on material, I spend some time getting to know my student. In order to best help them, they need to trust me- to see me both as a peer and as a teacher.
Once I've established a level of trust with the student, I start with a general review of the major concepts we're covering. Then, I move to practice problems or going over specific assignments or assessments. This part of the session would be unique to the student and their needs at that time.
I have worked with a variety of kids in middle school, high school, and college. Of these students, each one was in a different starting place academically whether barely staying afloat or trying to work out small details.
The key to finding a good tutor is not only finding someone adept at their area of expertise, but also finding someone your student will be excited to work with. You want someone that your child can relate to and won't talk down to them. A student that is excited about tutoring is likely to take the study skills and learning strategies they see in tutoring and apply them on their own.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What have I been doing to learn this material?
Where are the gaps in my knowledge?
Do I have a conceptual understanding of this material or am I merely copying the specifics without a larger understanding of application?
What would best help me specifically?
What are my goals?
