About Patrick
There are plenty of tutors out there, so you might be wondering what sets me apart. For one, I’ve loved science and math for as long as I can remember—and I love teaching them. If I didn’t have to pay bills or buy food, I’d probably do this for free. My passion helps students see math and science not as intimidating or boring, but as beautiful subjects that can be simple and fun when taught the right way. Another thing that sets me apart is my unique education: I hold two PhDs—one in mathematics from Johns Hopkins and another in physics from UC Berkeley. This means I not only have decades of problem-solving experience but also a broader perspective on these subjects, allowing me to pinpoint the best way to help students understand the math or science topics they’re struggling with. Finally, I’ve taught in a wide range of settings and even won awards for my teaching. I’ve worked one-on-one as a tutor, taught small classes at community colleges, and instructed hundreds of students in prestigious university settings. In short, if you’re looking for someone who has the knowledge and experience to help you achieve your goals—and who truly wants you to succeed—then I’m your guy.

If I've learned anything from nearly 20 years of teaching, it's this: anyone can learn science and math. The key is having personalized instruction from someone who cares about your success, has the experience to find the right approach for your unique way of learning, and works with you to achieve your goals. That’s exactly what I offer as your tutor.
When we first meet, we’ll talk about the challenges you’re facing in class and what you want to achieve from our sessions. Whether your goal is to pass the course or gain a deep understanding of the subject, I’ll tailor our work to meet your needs.
A typical session starts with a quick review or discussion of the topic—think of it as a warm-up jog before the sprint. From there, we dive into problems and concepts, with me guiding you every step of the way. When you’re ready, I’ll step back to let you work independently; if you hit a hurdle, I’ll be right there to help. The one thing I won’t do is lecture to you the whole time—after all, that’s what class is for.

I took Patrick’s linear algebra class back in Fall 2014, and the impact of his teaching stays with me to this day. Patrick holds dual PhDs in Math and Physics from top-tier universities, making him an incredibly brilliant and competent instructor. Yet, what truly sets him apart is his profound humility and genuine investment in his students' success. His lessons are beautifully structured, engaging, and clear. He even injects fascinating, well-rounded cultural insights into his teaching (he once quoted Dostoevsky in class!). Patrick’s rare passion for teaching makes him the ultimate Superprof tutor—I cannot recommend him highly enough.
I am honored to recommend Dr. Zulkowski for this teaching position. As a graduate of UC Berkeley with a degree in Mathematics, I can personally attest to the profound impact Dr. Zulkowski has had on my academic and professional journey.
Coming from a very religious school where formal mathematics education was limited, I initially enrolled in Berkeley Community College with a strong desire to pursue STEM but felt unprepared for the challenges ahead. Dr. Zulkowski was my first math teacher there, and his exceptional teaching and mentorship were instrumental in shaping my path. I eagerly enrolled in every math class he offered, driven by his ability to make complex concepts accessible and engaging.
Dr. Zulkowski possesses a unique talent for breaking down intricate mathematical ideas into understandable and intuitive components. His natural teaching style not only clarified difficult topics but also ignited my passion for mathematics. Through his guidance, what once seemed cryptic became a language I could fluently comprehend and utilize. This transformation was pivotal in equipping me with the tools necessary to gain admission to one of the most competitive mathematics programs in the country.
Beyond his teaching prowess, Dr. Zulkowski fosters a supportive and inspiring learning environment that encourages students to explore and excel. His dedication to his students' success is evident in the way he nurtures their intellectual curiosity and builds a strong foundational understanding of mathematical principles.
Dr. Zulkowski's ability to inspire and educate is truly remarkable, and I am deeply grateful for the role he played in my academic development. I am confident that he will continue to make significant contributions to the field of mathematics and positively impact the lives of many more students.I was fortunate enough to take four out of my five college math courses with Professor Zulkowski, and he stands out as one of the most caring and best professors I’ve ever had. His classes were always well-organized, and he showed up on time with an enthusiasm that immediately set a positive tone for learning. Whether it was breaking down complex theories into more understandable parts, or dedicating time for students to be able to ask questions and engage with the material, he made sure all of us felt supported. His lectures were both informative and engaging, and they sparked an interest in math that I hadn’t felt before which remains with to this day. The practice exams he provided were also invaluable for exam preparation, closely mirroring the style and difficulty we could expect on test day. He would also provide his lecture notes and other resources online so they were easy to access.
Beyond his teaching methods, Professor Zulkowski’s genuine warmth and approachability truly set him apart. He welcomed discussions and made sure his students were able to develop their own problem solving skills on how to approach problems. I always felt comfortable seeking help from him, and his patience and kindness provided a comfortable space for me to learn a difficult subject like math. Thanks to his deep knowledge, energetic presentation, and sincere dedication, math no longer felt like a stressful subject—it became something I looked forward to exploring. I am sincerely grateful to have had the opportunity to learn from Professor Zulkowski, and I would recommend him to anyone seeking to learn from a supportive, knowledgeable, and inspiring professor.Patrick is the rare person who has both a deep understanding of technical topics, and the ability to break them down into their simplest parts in a way that "just makes sense". Anyone would be lucky to get to learn from him!
I worked with Patrick developing math and science curriculum at Brilliant.org, and have perspective as someone who has tutored and taught computer science at the university level. Patrick has a talent for explaining mathematical concepts in ways that are novel, engaging, and clear that is frankly *incredibly* rare among people with his depth of mathematical background and sophistication. I'd strongly recommend him as a tutor to someone taking a course in high school calculus or graduate level statistics. Furthermore, if your goals aren't in the context of a specific curriculum — for instance, if you are in a graduate program and need to develop mathematical sophistication in an area that you're unfamiliar with in order to succeed at a research project — I can literally think of noone better suited than Patrick.
I had the privilege of working with Patrick for years at Brilliant, where he became an invaluable mentor in pedagogy. His teaching approach is truly exceptional - he has a remarkable ability to meet people where they are, listening intently to understand their perspective and challenges. What sets him apart is how skillfully he adapts his teaching methods to match unique learning styles and capabilities. His expertise in Mathematics and Physics isn't just impressive - it's matched by his genuine passion for helping others understand these complex subjects. Patrick's guidance has profoundly shaped my own approach to teaching and problem-solving.
He is passionate about math education, a professional in his field, and a goal-directed tutor. He will meet your perspective and needs.
I took a calculus class with Patrick. He was very organized, explained the topics very clearly, and always encouraged us to ask questions. His classes were always full of people. I learned a ton from him and absolutely recommend him!
Nearly a decade ago, I had the privilege of taking Calculus with Professor Patrick Zulowski at Berkeley City College. To this day, he remains the most memorable, compassionate, and brilliant math instructor I’ve encountered throughout my academic journey, including my time in technical courses at UC Berkeley.
Professor Zulowski had an incredible ability to break down complex concepts into understandable pieces. His explanations were clear and intuitive, making the subject accessible and even enjoyable. He also cultivated a classroom atmosphere where every student felt empowered to succeed.
If he can inspire and elevate an entire classroom, I can only imagine the transformative impact of his one-on-one tutoring. I wholeheartedly recommend him to anyone seeking a tutor—his dedication and expertise are unmatched.View more recommendations
