About Suki
Hello, I'm Suki! I am a native speaker of both Mandarin and Cantonese, based right here in beautiful Edinburgh. With 15 years of teaching experience, I have had the absolute joy of guiding an incredibly diverse range of learners. My students range from young children taking their first steps into a new language to senior diplomats preparing for overseas postings.
My approach to teaching is deeply rooted in my own academic and professional journey. I hold a dual BA in Chinese Literature and Philosophy from Peking University, alongside three Master's degrees, including one with Distinction from a UK Russell Group university. This extensive background has given me a profound appreciation for different educational methodologies and cross-cultural communication, which I now bring into every lesson.
Before dedicating myself fully to language tuition, I spent over a decade working in international journalism, government public relations, and as a docent at major national museums. Outside of academia, I am just as passionate about the practical side of my heritage. You will often find me practising Calligraphy (which I have done for over 20 years!), playing traditional instruments like the Guqin, Pipa, and Erhu, or studying the quiet art of the Tea Ceremony.
Having travelled extensively and deeply throughout China to explore its diverse regional cultures, dialects, and traditions, I bring a rich, authentic perspective to my teaching. I pride myself on being patient, highly adaptable, and down to earth. I am not just here to drill vocabulary; I am here to be your cultural bridge. My ultimate goal is to create a warm, supportive environment where you feel completely comfortable making mistakes, asking questions, and growing at your own pace.

My approach to tutoring is entirely bespoke, drawing on my 15 years of trusted experience and my background as a Peking University alumna with three Master's degrees. I firmly believe that learning Mandarin or Cantonese should be a living, breathing experience, rather than just rote memorisation.
My Teaching Methodology
I utilise a unique "research-storytelling" method. Rather than relying solely on standard textbooks, I incorporate dynamic, real-world materials such as current news, cultural texts, and social media trends to teach authentic communication. For students who wish to dive deeper, I love weaving my 20 years of experience in Chinese calligraphy, the Guqin, and tea culture into our classes, offering a genuine, 3D cultural immersion.
Typical Lesson Structure
A standard lesson typically lasts for 60 or 90 minutes, depending on your goals and schedule. Every session is carefully balanced to include conversational practice, listening comprehension, and cultural nuances, always moving at a pace that feels comfortable and encouraging for you.

Please note that my current hourly rate of £30 is a special introductory offer while I build my profile on this platform. To provide even better value for committed learners, I also offer discounted block bookings at £140 for 5 hours and £270 for 10 hours.
To help us get started, I happily offer a complimentary 30 minute introductory session. This gives us the perfect opportunity to chat about your goals, assess your current level, and ensure my teaching style is the exact right fit for you.
All bespoke teaching materials, including cultural texts, current news articles, and tailored study notes, are fully included in your lesson price. Online lessons incur no extra fees whatsoever. If you prefer to learn in person, I am conveniently based in Edinburgh city centre. While I have a standard £20 travel fee listed for home visits, please know this is entirely negotiable depending on the exact distance and travel time to your location.
