About Bob
• I’ve taught every level of math from counting to Precalculus, while specializing in getting students excited about math - with several decades of experience in teaching math from early elementary arithmetic to high school Algebra-1, Algebra-2, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Precalculus.
• Since 1995, some 4,000 students in grades 2-7 have attended SAI: the Summer Algebra Institute for Kids - my math enrichment program in which we teach substantive algebra to regular students in elementary grades.
• I’ve earned aMaster’s degree in Elementary Math Education from the University of Minnesota, with over 20 years of tutoring individual students, with more frequency of tutoring in the past 4-5 years.
• I have worked with students from all types of schooling backgrounds - public schools, private schools, charter schools, and home schools.

• One central approach of my teaching and tutoring is an emphasis upon a foundational understanding of a topic. For example:
—Without using the words “add” or “addition”, what does "addition" mean?
— Without using the words "equals" or "equality", tell me what the symbol "=" means.
— What are “like terms” in Algebra?
• Ideas are the building blocks of learning, allowing the learner to have that "Aha!" experience of the light going on in “getting it”!
• Another vital dynamic I use is memorization. Memorization doesn’t make math mastery harder! Memorization makes math mastery POSSIBLE!. I teach kids HOW to memorize.
• Perhaps the most important aspect of how I tutor is my specialty of teaching the broad ideas - the principles - which reveal the unity and connectedness of math across grades and across topics.
• Specifically, one powerful Principle I teach is “FNLN” - the First Name Last Name Principle. EVERY teacher and parent to whom I’ve shown the FNLN Principle has said something to the effect, “I wish I’d known that when I was in K-6 grades - it would have made Algebra so muc easier.”
• Other principles I teach are the Operations Principle, the Skip Counting Principle, and the “Say-What-You-See” Principle they simplify and connect the teaching and learning of math by providing both the details and the big picture of math.
• Finally, I love kids, I love math, and I love learning. I love getting kids excited about math!
