About Huy
I am currently working as a scientist in the biopharma sector in Cambridge/Boston MA. I have been in the industry for 5 years, working on various therapies for rare blood diseases and autoimmune diseases. Prior to biotech, I earned a PhD degree in biomedical sciences at the University of Vermont, where I studied human immunology in the context of vaccine development. Before my PhD, I earned my BS degree in molecular biology at Cal State San Marcos, and worked in an immunology lab for two years after graduation. My student teaching journey started in undergrad where I was a Supplemental Instruction leader for 4 years, in Molecular and Cell Biology courses. In grad school, besides teaching assignments in General Biology and Microbiology, I mentored undergrad and grad students in our research lab. My mentoring path continued into biotech where I worked with undergrad students during their co-ops and internships.

While science topics can be complex, it can be digestible with the correct approaches. My teaching often employs a structural framework on which students learn the both the granular details and the high-level understanding of the topics. A structured understanding, coupled with information recall tactics, enables students to not only master the materials, but also to synthesize new ideas upon previous learnings. This method has proven effective in my previous role as a Supplemental Instruction (SI) leader for college biology courses. Students who attended SI regularly demonstrated a better understanding of the materials, and ultimately earned higher grades.
What also sets my teaching apart is the application of theoretical information. Biological principles can sometimes feel abstract, which necessitate a hands-on practical components (the lab portion). Understanding of these abstract ideas can often be improved when we are able to make the connections between them and real-life experiences. With more than 10 years of experience in research and teaching, I can help students draw these connections, and apply what they learn on paper to understand how science works in our daily life.
My expertise covers foundational cell and molecular biology, biotechnology, immunology, vaccine research, cell and gene therapy, and drug discovery.
