Having spent much of the past decade living, teaching and studying abroad, I have gained a lot of experience working with students to help them achieve their language learning goals. I teach General English lessons and IELTS preparation lessons for students studying for both the General and Academic Skills tests. My lessons incorporate various materials and are always personalised to my students' interests, needs and areas of weakness. My own insights and experience studying Mandarin Chinese have equipped me with a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by my students. I have found that building confidence and maximising practice are key to helping students improve and succeed - something I am always mindful of encouraging and building with my students through various strategies and approaches to learning and teaching.

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I am a fluent native English speaker. Born, raised and educated in the UK.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

Sherlock Holmes - the deductive genius who uses his analytic mind for good. His life is both gloriously detached and also more deeply engaged with the crime-ridden, class-divided, fascinating world of late-Victorian London.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

'Time flies when you are having fun'
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Most people consider English to be a global language because it is the one language that is spoken and understood by the majority of the population in almost every region of the world. ... It is perhaps this worldwide acceptance and usage of the English language that propels it as an extremely essential global language.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

I think the main difficulty for learners of any language is finding and maintaining motivation.

4 Tips for staying motivated to learn a language:

Set realistic, achievable goals - and regularly reflect on progress and reset goals as you improve.

Remember why you started. When you first started your language learning journey, it was for a reason.

Reflect on what you've learned so far and the progress you've made.

    Identify distractions.

    Reward yourself.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

The first Mandarin Chinese lesson I had was completely bewildering as I had no idea what was being said to me or what was going on in the class. It was a very eye-opening experience for me as it forced me to be completely out of my comfort zone and in the same shoes that I know many of my students find themselves in. It was humbling to say the least!
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Almost a decade of travel and work in Asia has given me an enormous amount of insight and perspective that have influenced my understanding and appreciation of my student's quest to learn, improve and like English!
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

I am a native English speaker, born and raised in the UK who has a lot of experience teaching as well as valuable insight from my own learning experiences, especially as a learner of Mandarin Chinese!
