About Janelle
I grew up playing the piano and later developed a passion for singing, guitar, and songwriting. Music has always been my way of connecting with others and myself, serving as a profound form of self-expression. Over time, I discovered the deep connection between music and personal well-being, a concept fundamental to many cultures. This realisation led me to pursue Music Therapy, exploring how music can unlock and express our 'healthy selves' in various contexts.
During my Honours year, I conducted a community project consisting of songwriting and music production with vulnerable adolescents at a children's village. This facilitated a capacity for self-expression, exploring identity and growing confidence. During my Masters, I then conducted a dissertation on the use of Vibroacoustic Therapy for autistic children, which revealed emotion regulating benefits among others.
At the heart of my practice lies the belief that 'the client is the expert.' While I have extensive training and a foundation in evidence-based knowledge, I firmly believe that clients possess everything they need to grow and heal in their own unique way. My role is to facilitate this process for them, using the arts as my co-therapist. Adopting a strengths-based approach, I aim to uncover the inherent strengths and resources within each person.
Time and again, I witness how music can afford us new and beautiful experiences of ourselves. Through creative processes including music-listening and making, songwriting, movement and art, I am dedicated to guiding clients on a journey of self-discovery, self-expression and resilience.
