About Kirk
I am an English Language Arts teacher, certified to teach in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Over the years, I have taken several opportunities that have allowed me to teach in some capacity, and these opportunities have always been immensely rewarding. I've been fortunate enough to have spent a wonderful 12 months in Uji, Japan, where I taught English as a Second Language at Higashiuji Senior High School. After Japan, I spent a couple years writing hedge fund due diligence reports in Halifax, NS, and, while this experience was hugely educational, I couldn't help thinking that teaching English Language Arts was my true calling, so I returned to university to earn a B.Ed., and now I'm looking to apply these skills here in St. John's.
In my spare time I write, play guitar, run and take in stories through any medium. I love learning and finding ways to incorporate my own interests into the curricula I teach, a natural way to be passionate about the material no matter the outcome I am teaching my students to achieve. By being open about my interests outside the classroom, I hope to inspire students to develop their own passions and approaches to learning that are unique to them.

I believe it is the role of an educator to bring students to place of confidence in the subject area, to remove any intimidation that goes along with the territory and teach to each student's individual strengths. It is from here that we can best expand into new, undiscovered territory.
My method of teaching uses an inquiry-driven, dialogic model, where students are encouraged to ask questions and talk openly about their own experiences and interests. These discussions become the framework within which I teach the desired learning outcome.
