  • Tell us more about your subject. How did you develop an interest in this field?

Chess has always fascinated me because it is much more than a game of moving pieces. It teaches you to think ahead, recognise patterns, manage pressure and, most importantly, take responsibility for your decisions.

My interest in chess developed gradually through playing and exploring the game myself. Over time, I became particularly interested in the thinking process behind a move, why a position demands a particular decision and how different players approach the same situation differently. That eventually led me towards teaching.

Today, I enjoy making chess easier and more engaging for students by connecting the concepts on the board with skills they can use in everyday life.
  • What or who is the motivation behind you choosing to teach and why?

My biggest motivation is seeing the change that happens when a student begins to think independently.

As a teacher, there is a special satisfaction in seeing a student go from asking, “What move should I move?” to asking, “What are my options and which one makes the most sense?” That transition from dependence to independent thinking is what motivates me.

I also believe teaching is one of the most meaningful ways of giving back. Knowledge becomes more valuable when you are able to pass it on and help someone else develop confidence in their own abilities.
  • How does your work help society?

Chess or public speaking develops qualities that are useful far beyond the chessboard or a classroom — concentration, patience, logical reasoning, decision-making and the ability to deal with both success and failure.

Through teaching chess and personality development, I hope to contribute to developing young people who are comfortable thinking for themselves.

In a world where children are increasingly exposed to instant answers and distractions, chess gives them a space where they have to pause, analyse and make their own decisions.

For me, the larger impact of teaching is therefore not simply producing better chess players or speakers, but helping students become better thinkers.
  • If you had to think of a role model for your work, who do you think of and why?

I look up to teachers and mentors who focus not merely on giving answers but on teaching people how to find answers for themselves.

In the chess world, I particularly admire coaches who can take something complex and explain it in a way that makes a student curious rather than intimidated. That is the kind of teacher I aspire to be.

I also draw inspiration from people I have encountered in my own educational and professional journey who took the time to mentor me, challenge my thinking and give me opportunities before I was completely ready for them. Their influence reminds me that a good teacher can sometimes change the trajectory of a person's life without even realising it.
  • Tell us about your hobbies outside teaching.

Outside teaching, I work in Human Resources, with a particular interest in Employee Relations and workplace practices. I enjoy understanding people, organisational behaviour and how different perspectives can be brought together to solve problems.

I am also passionate about public speaking and reading. I have participated in literary and youth leadership platforms, and I enjoy discussions around society, public policy and current affairs. I also help people build their resumes and help them with mock interview sessions

And, of course, chess itself remains a hobby even when I am not teaching it! I also enjoy travelling, spending time with family and exploring different ways of learning and developing myself.
  • Do you have an anecdote to tell us about your student or professional life?

One of the things I enjoy most about teaching chess is that students often surprise you.

I remember working with a student who initially tended to make moves very quickly. Whenever I asked why they had played a particular move, the answer was usually, “It looked good.” Instead of simply correcting the moves, I started asking them to pause before every move and answer three questions: What is my opponent threatening? What are my options? What happens if I make this move?

After some time, I noticed that the student had started applying the same process without being prompted. The interesting part was that the improvement wasn't just visible in the games — the student had become much more comfortable explaining their own decisions.

That experience reinforced something I strongly believe about teaching: the real achievement isn't when a student remembers what you taught them; it is when they start thinking without needing you to tell them what to do.
