About Joanna
I am a singing tutor with 9 years of experience and a Bachelor of Music in Choral Conducting alongside extensive practical experience directing community and church choirs across my region. I have taught over 310 students and a meaningful number have gone on to lead their own choral or community singing groups using skills developed in our work together. My active conducting career, including currently directing two community choral ensembles, means my teaching of choral leadership skills is grounded in current, ongoing practical experience rather than purely theoretical instruction. I find genuine satisfaction in helping musicians develop the specific leadership capability to bring people together through shared singing.

My singing teaching specialises in preparing students to lead group singing and choral ensembles, developing the specific skills required for choir direction, community singing leadership, and vocal section coaching that differ significantly from purely individual vocal performance skills. I begin with basic conducting technique — clear beat patterns, cueing entries, and the physical gestures that communicate dynamic and expressive intentions to a group of singers without verbal interruption during performance. Vocal warm-up sequence design is taught as a specific and important skill — students learn to construct effective group warm-up routines that address breath, resonance, and range progressively while remaining accessible to singers of varying experience levels. I address section coaching specifically — how to work effectively with a group of singers on the same vocal part, identifying and addressing common issues efficiently across a group. Rehearsal pacing and time management for group singing sessions is addressed because effective rehearsal leadership requires balancing thoroughness with maintaining group energy. I teach students to listen analytically to group vocal sound, identifying balance issues, intonation problems, and blend challenges within an ensemble context. Score preparation and marking for choral leadership covers how to study and prepare a choral score effectively, anticipating challenges and planning rehearsal strategy before the group rehearsal begins. Communication and motivational leadership skills are addressed explicitly because effectively leading volunteer or community singers requires specific interpersonal skills alongside musical competence. I provide opportunities for students to practise actual leadership within structured contexts. My teaching goal is a singer equipped with the genuine practical skills to lead and inspire group singing effectively.
