About Gabrielle

Aegroto dum anima est, spes est: As long as there is life, there is hope...and there is also a great joy in learning Latin and Ancient Greek! With several years of experience reading Latin and Ancient Greek and a bachelor's and forthcoming master's degree in Classics, I have tutored several college students in Latin and Ancient Greek and wish to continue spreading the enthusiasm beyond my alma maters of Columbia University and Oxford.

My lessons are for beginner-intermediate level students who want to become acquainted with Latin and/or Ancient Greek vocabulary, grammar, literary texts, and history. For both beginners and intermediate-level students, I first assess the student's level through either speaking with them about their experience or providing a reading/writing exercise. I also ask what they wish to accomplish from the lesson. For beginners, I then introduce a new grammatical concept or set of vocabulary, together with examples of how to use the vocabulary and grammar. I then give the student a reading exercise with historical and literary significance and provide context. This is followed by a writing exercise relevant to the passage read, which we also discuss at length. I then introduce a new grammatical concept and set of vocabulary, together with another set of examples and reading/writing exercises. By the end of the lesson, the student will receive a set of take-home exercise should they wish to practice further. For intermediate students, the lessons are oriented around reading a significant passage, such as Cicero's Pro Archia or Plato's Symposium, and discussing the grammar and vocabulary present. Commentaries are referenced, together with important reference materials such as Smyth's Greek Grammar, Allen and Greenough's New Latin Grammar, etc. Should the student wish to discuss the historical and literary significance of the texts, I also provide commentary. Enthusiastic intermediate students may also be provided with composition exercises.
