About Ren

I am a 33 year old artist, writer, and human rights activist who has worked as a freelancer since 2016, primarily in Germany. I am originally from the United States, and received my BFA in Dance from UNC Greensboro in 2012, with both writing and speaking concentrations. Since moving abroad in 2016, I have received several fellowships from Germany and Portugal and multiple grants to implement social and creative projects. I am well versed in topics concerning global history, international politics, and feminism, which are the primary focal points of my research and grant making. I have written and published three scholarly essays on queer history and migration policies, and additionally have written scripts for a total of 10 performing arts works, in Seattle, Berlin, and Lisbon. I believe I am an excellent tutor for someone who has interdisciplinary interests and perhaps is struggling to find clarity in their thoughts and how to convey them. I have worked on the essays and grant applications of colleagues for years, sometimes also translating them from German or Portuguese to English, and am well accustomed to helping others form their ideas in language.

I am also a very kind and patient person. I am able to work with people who have alternative ways of learning and bringing sense to the complex structure ofwriting.

About the lesson

I am extremely experienced in multiple forms of writing, including art and humanities grants, academic essays, scholarly articles, poetry, and personal statements. As I am currently pursuing my Masters in Art and Politics after an extensive art and human rights career in the US, Germany, and Portugal, I am interested in sharing my knowledge with high school and undergraduate students. I have worked with students in the arts sector since 2012 and I am excited to reach a wider range of students online. Language is critical to contexualizing and understanding our position in the world, and helping each person find the most authentic and yet successful way to express their ideas is something I am very passionate about.

In our lessons, we will focus both on using precise grammar and correct citation methods, as well as crafting pieces of writing which reflect a thoughtful and well researched individual. We will also learn tools about how to read critically and not just memorize information, but be able to hold discourse about it. As a researcher and scholar myself, I will also be able to point students in the direction of writers whose work might enhance their own. I am also extremely successful at writing grant and university applications, having received extensive awards myself, and we will discuss the best approaches to crafting a well-organized, unique piece of writing that both reflects the individual, and yet demonstrates a breadth of knowledge about the context of the essay´s topic and motivation.
