In my experience, tutoring for test preparation tends to be more goal-oriented and standardized where I'm leading lessons and reviewing material with a focus on helping the student to pass the test. In general tutoring, the goal may be to help the student improve their grades or get into a more advanced course, which can make lessons vary more widely.
