About Emelia
Hi, I'm Emelia! Currently, I'm a Master of Fine Arts candidate in the Virginia Tech creative writing program. Before pursuing my Master’s degree, I graduated summa cum laude from the University of Denver with a Bachelor's degree in English and minors in studio art and communications. I am well-versed in all kinds of creative writing, but poetry is my specialty. Due to my background in studio art, I dabble in many types of hybrid arts and writing.
As an undergraduate student, tutored high school students for the ACT English, Reading and Writing sections and have helped my students achieve their score goals. As a graduate student at Virginia Tech, I work as a teaching assistant. In my GTA role, I work as an instructor, teaching first year undergraduate students how to write effective research papers using an IMRaD format and I work in the university's writing center as a coach for both undergraduate and graduate students. In the Writing Center, I have tutored students on writing essays for all subjects, personal statements for graduate school and grant applications, and for all kinds of creative writing.

My teaching philosophy is simple: learning is most effective when we get there ourselves; a good teacher guides us on our way. I aim to foster my students' academic growth by giving them the individualized attention necessary to pinpoint their interests and activate their curiosity. I design my lessons to be interactive, allowing students to discuss problems, brainstorm solutions, and formulate questions that deepen the conversation.
In the first tutoring session, I like to get to know my students. I’ll ask what you’re passionate about and what your goals are. Then I ask you about the subject I'm tutoring and try to determine the most effective teaching strategy. I ask about your past experiences with this subject and what you’d like to accomplish through tutoring. I'll also ask you about moments, in or out of school, when you’ve felt a difficult concept click. Then we'll work out how you reached that moment and talk about working to a similar place through tutoring. For instance, if you're a student of science working on essay writing, I'll emphasize the methodical. We'll develop a set of steps for planning, writing, and editing their essays. As you gain confidence applying your old skills in a new way, it’s easier to learn new strategies.
