About Mya
My passion for learning Chinese continues to drive my exploration of the subject and my desire to help others with the language. I was awarded the 3rd Year Chinese Department award in the Fall of 2022, and I have made all A's in my Chinese classes. I have also obtained some education and experience in the field of pedagogy, and have developed several mock lesson plans as well as obtained numerous hours as a classroom observer. I have worked with children and adults in a variety of other volunteer and care settings; most notably through running a VBS station at my local church all through high school and into college.

In my lessons, I would like to encourage students to think through questions and develop solutions on their own, and I believe that language tutoring should emphasize past skills while incorporating new ones in order to draw connections and encourage continued memory of words and grammar patterns. I integrate retrieval practice methods (flash cards, short quizzes, etc.) rather than rote memorization to make learning stick.
I have taken Chinese classes since high school, and have finished all of the levels of Chinese language taught at Rhodes College. I will continue to practice my own skills through my Advanced course in Chinese literature next semester. I am most comfortable tutoring Chinese at the elementary, middle and high school levels; or at a basic-intermediate fluency level.
