Sample Lesson: Lesson Title “Unraveling the Case of the Confused Patient: Understanding Acid-Base Imbalance” Learning Objectives By the end of this session, students will be able to: Explain the physiological mechanisms maintaining acid-base balance. Analyze arterial blood gas (ABG) results to identify the type of imbalance. Propose interventions appropriate to the patient’s condition. Materials Case handouts ABG interpretation chart Whiteboard or digital collaboration tool Reference textbooks / tablets Lesson Procedure (60 minutes) Time Activity Description 0–10 min Introduction Instructor presents a brief clinical vignette: “A 68-year-old male with COPD admitted with confusion and labored breathing…” 10–15 min Group Formation & Task Students form groups of 4–5 and receive patient lab values (pH, pCO₂, HCO₃⁻). 15–30 min Problem Analysis Groups discuss possible causes of the imbalance and identify whether it’s respiratory/metabolic acidosis or alkalosis. 30–45 min Application & Decision-Making Each group suggests nursing/respiratory interventions and justifies their rationale. 45–55 min Group Presentation Groups share findings; instructor facilitates peer feedback and clarifies misconceptions. 55–60 min Reflection & Wrap-Up Students reflect: “What cues helped you identify the imbalance?” Instructor summarizes key takeaways.
