About Damon

I graduated UC Berkeley in 2010 with a BA in Molecular and Cell Biology and Economics. At the time, I was interested in scientific research and pursued positions within different university laboratories. I started working at Loma Linda University in 2011 and used my experience to matriculate into the Integrated Biomedical Graduate Studies Program there, eventually achieving my PhD in Physiology in 2016. As a predoctoral student and postdoctorate researcher at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, I researched hemorrhagic stroke using rodent models. I then helped research sudden cardiac arrest at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Then Covid happened and I saw the damage that was done within the education system at large. Consequent school closures and remote learning set students back at least a year in learning, which is reflected in lower standardized test scores. The response by school administrators and public education officials seemed to be to steer education and school curricula towards achieving more political ends to the detriment of the students they are supposed to serve. The goal of education should be to teach students how to be self-reliant, think for themselves, and write / speak with clarity and precision. By preparing them to achieve, students will gain a sense of self-worth.

Thus I changed my career and focused on becoming a teacher. Education was not going to fix itself, it needed people willing to be part of that change. This was a calling that I am answering.

My mission is to guide students towards becoming self-reliant independent thinkers, and my teaching approach is reflective of this mission. Students best learn through discovery, which is facilitated by knowing how to ask the relevant how and why questions followed by discovering the answers themselves. My role as a teacher is to guide this process.

A typical lesson plan will involve first me knowing and mastering the concepts being taught myself. Thus I acquire a thorough background of the subject material and come well-prepared for the lesson. I then position the student to learn by keeping the student and myself focused on the concept. I teach the concept in a language the student can understand, and I start with reviewing something the student already knows then move towards what they do not know. I reinforce the concept through application questions and examples, and eventually assess the student's mastery by having them describe the concept back to me in their own words.

I am open to tutoring clients at the elementary, middle school, high school, and collegiate levels. My strengths are math and science, but I can also assist with grammar, literature, and history as well.
