About Matt
I am deeply curious and interested in knowledge of all areas, particularly economics and maths. It is this genuine love and enjoyment of the subjects I teach that makes me so passionate about tutoring, and the opportunity it provides to help others develop a similar interest in and appreciation of these subjects. This ensures that I am fully dedicated to every student and provide the best possible service I can, as doing so is genuinely enjoyable for myself.
Generally, I am extremely easy going, and students are very comfortable and themselves during my lessons, which are relaxed and informal as a result. Whilst formality and a more disciplined approach can instil a form of motivation, I seek to make the lessons and the material fun and interesting, thus fostering an intrinsic motivation for the subject.
I am extremely knowledgeable in all areas I teach, achieving A** (A* with distinction) in GCSE further maths, A* in maths, further maths and economics A-level and degrees in economics from Cambridge and Bristol.

One-on-one teaching provides an opportunity for a very different learning experience to that of a classroom, and my approach to tutoring fully utilises the potential advantages these differences can provide. Unlike in the classroom, I will provide bespoke lessons, focusing on weaker subject areas, with a teaching style tailored optimally for the individual student. This adaptable approach to provides an alternative avenue through which progress can be made in understanding challenging topics and subjects, rather than applying more forcefully the same approach as before, in which limited progress may be being made.
Whilst adaptable, my teaching style is consistently guided by the principle that providing a deeper and more intuitive understanding of a topic, possibly by expanding slightly upon a rigid syllabus, will greatly enhance a student’s capability and confidence when it comes to answering questions on these topics in an assessment.
The formulaic, routine based approach to teaching for exams and essays in the classroom, requires memorisation of a vast amount of knowledge and solution techniques. This memorisation tends to be very surface level, and not tied to a deeper, more intuitive and interconnected understanding of the topic area and subject as a whole. When it comes to assessments, it is often difficult to accurately remember all this seemingly meaningless knowledge, whilst students lack the understanding to comfortably adapt when faced with unfamiliar questions that deviate from the taught orthodoxy. By providing teaching that focuses on a deeper, more interconnected and meaningful understanding of a subject, students are more easily able to recall information and apply it confidently in unfamiliar scenarios – with the potential for significant improvements in exam performance as result.
Typically, lessons will last between 1-2 hours and occur every week, with some additional work provided in between where appropriate. There is significant flexibility from this depending on the students needs and circumstances, and any initial plans for teaching structure and content to be covered can be amended as we go.
I have been teaching in Maths and Economics, at GCSE and A-level and for the past 5 years, and more recently in Economics at undergraduate and masters level. During this time I have received positive feedback from numerous students, who have gone on to achieve or improve upon desired results, and progress to first-choice universities.
