Find out more about David

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

As a child, I often helped my friends with homework, explaining concepts in a way they found clear and easy to understand. They appreciated my patience, and I enjoyed seeing them grasp difficult topics. Years later, during a 10-year school reunion, some friends told me that I had been their "real" math teacher, which solidified my passion for teaching and tutoring.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach a range of subjects, primarily focused on computer programming. This includes languages and technologies such as Python, Java, SQL, AI, MATLAB, and HTML. I also enjoy helping students with math, statistics, and other engineering-related topics. I particularly enjoy discussing programming fundamentals and real-world applications of coding, though some of the more theoretical topics can be challenging for students.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes, I was deeply inspired by my technical education teacher. They encouraged me to create things, which sparked my interest in developing software. Today, I aim to inspire my students in the same way, helping them see the possibilities of what they can create through programming.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Patience and an understanding of how each student thinks are essential. A good tutor should adapt their methods to suit different learning styles and be flexible in how they explain concepts. In my opinion, this ability to accommodate various approaches is one of the most important skills for any tutor.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

One time in school, I was asked to explain a math homework solution to the class. I ended up helping several classmates at once, and although it resulted in a light reprimand from the teacher for disrupting the lesson, the experience helped me realize how much I enjoyed explaining concepts to others. It was a small moment that had a big impact on my passion for tutoring.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still face in your subject?

One challenge I face is the need to continuously refresh my knowledge to teach effectively. This requires revisiting foundational concepts, which helps me anticipate common difficulties students may encounter. By remembering the steps I took to understand the material, I can better guide students through their learning process.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general, an element of the subject, or something completely different?

Teaching is my passion. I'm especially fond of Python and Java, as I feel a strong connection to these languages. There's something very fulfilling about helping students grasp complex topics and watching their confidence grow.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

My patience and adaptability set me apart. I tailor each session to meet individual student needs, preparing thoroughly to address their specific challenges. I strive to create a comfortable and encouraging environment for learning.
