About Matt

I graduated from the University of York with an Honours in English Literature, and moved to take an MA in Film Studies at King's College London, which I completed last year with first class honours. Before my degree, I took the IB Diploma, during which I studied English, French, Maths and Philosophy. I have over 3 years of experience as a tutor on this platform. I've delivered over 200 lessons, and have delivered consistent results in English Language, English Literature, and Maths across that time, markedly improving my students' grades and confidence in those subjects. My passion is in literature and film, and that's a career I'm currently pursuing, but what I offer in Maths is a results-focused, clear approach.

Every student can find something to love in any subject, but English and Maths have often been labelled as subjects that you either 'get' or 'don't get': if you aren't 'good' at Maths or English, that's it. I fundamentally disagree with this. Both subjects, and all of their exams, have a fundamentally logical structure that, with enough time, care, and practice, anyone can learn and apply. My first aim with my lessons is getting my students to understand that structure. Once we have accomplished that, then we can move on to more complex ideas and analysis.

I come to each lesson with a wealth of resources - exam papers, revision booklets, etc. - but always try to keep a hands-on and interactive approach to lessons, rather than handing a student an exam paper and marking it.

If we ever do exam papers together, I make sure to take them through each question, and, by breaking them down, help them to understand what bits of knowledge they're required to put on the page. A large part of exam success is learning how to read a question and then how to respond to it.

I tend to run through course specifications with my students, and, over a term, tackle each point in succession. I try to divide all my lessons into three parts - introduction, exploration, and assessment. I introduce an idea to my student, we spend most of the lesson talking through it together, and then I assess them on it (in what I hope is a fun way). That's what worked for me, and that's what I've found effective over the years of my tutoring. That's my general approach, however I'm open and flexible to anything that works for the student. I'm working for you, so my aim is to make our lessons as clear and as helpful as possible.
