Audience: Children: Ages 4-7 Age Group or 8-12 Age Group

Background: Asian (Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Thai) or Latino (Spanish)

Course Objectives: Students will be introduced to new language skills, reading, writing, listening and speaking. Beginners to learn the alphabet and letter sounds, small words, greetings and basic phrases. Beginners will learn how to interact and sound out letters and eventually identify small words. Intermediate will continue with words, phrases, phonics and grammar, reading skills, speaking and listening. They will be able to read and write simple instructions.

Lesson Objectives: Students should be able to speak in small sentences and be able to recite the alphabet & identify letter sounds, they will learn greetings and day to day phrases such as: How are you today or have a nice day. They will be ready to progress to the next level of learning.

Materials: Online platform to use for Media: Reading Bear is easy for very young students to follow and interactive media or storybook learning tool. Flash Cards with letters and pictures for students to memorize and recognize.
Also, You Tube music videos (alphabet songs) Props & stuffed animals & pictures of objects that are easy to identify i.e. cat, dog, tree Reward stars and stickers

Detailed Procedure: This lesson would be an introduction to English, based on a 1-hour timeframe and a small class (max 10 students):
10 minutes - Introduction. Introduce myself, tell them something fun about me, where I live, what is my favorite food (ice cream) yummy. Connect with each student, ask them their name, age where they live, and their favorite food, activity, toy. Repeat their answers in English. Use pictures to prompt them.
5 minutes - set up classroom procedures and basic parameters. Explain how the class will proceed, how to participate, raise their hands, and how to answer, and how to speak directly to teacher if they need to do for any reason
10 minutes- Play the Alphabet song to introduce English letters. Just listen the first time, play again and encourage them to sing. Play 2 more times while they singalong. (watch to see which students may hold back)
10 minutes - Sing the song individually with each student
10 minutes - Introduce and play the letter sounds video. Play again 3 times while they sing along
10 minutes - Using flashcards 26 for each letter with pictures on the back and practice letters, sounds they make. Words will be introduced later
Wrap up /Homework. Practice the alphabet song at home during the week. End the lesson playing the alphabet song.

Anticipated Problems and Solutions: Students may be shy or hesitant to participate and may hold back at the beginning. It is important to introduce myself as teacher offer something fun about myself and ask them targeted questions about themselves such as age, name, maybe favorite food or drink (something they will find easy to understand). Students will need structure to be set up and reinforced regularly to keep them focused and engaged. Correcting students must be done carefully so as not to embarrass or cause students to hold back. Try to give easy activities and help prompt them with the answers in the beginning. Group activities (such as singing along) is a good activity to encourage students to participate. Change activities frequently as attention span will be short for these age groups.
