About Thomas
I have an immense passion for English Literature and believe in its power both to develop one's critical faculties as well as nurture the intangible qualities of the human condition. I have an accomplished background studying the subject having obtained a BA and MA from the University of Leicester. My teaching ethos is rooted in the belief that passion and understanding have a reciprocal relationship. The technical and pragmatic aspects of the subject can often be a point of anxiety for students and this may block enthusiasm for the subject making it that much harder to study. As such my aim is to focus on easing anxiety inducing areas through exciting exercises and discussions that attempt to transform a students perspective and clarify their understanding. Boredom is merely a point of view and English is a unique subject that can be tackled from so many different angles. My hope is to equip students with confidence and a command of the subject that will stay with them through all their future studies. Although this is my first time tutoring I have previous experience teaching. I have taught performance poetry to 13-16 years olds as part of my duties as resident poet for The Grammar School at Leeds and have also taught beginner art classes at The Attenborough Arts Centre for students at the University of Leicester. Both of these experiences have been very fruitful and have helped me to hone an energetic and perceptive teaching style.
