About Kai
Hi, I’m Kai — a passionate chess tutor with years of experience helping others improve their game. I take pride in creating a welcoming and supportive environment where students can learn at their own pace and truly enjoy the process of becoming a better chess player. As a four-time Gardiner Chess Sunshine Coast U18 Individual Champion (2013, 2014, 2016, 2017), I have a deep understanding of competitive play and practical strategies that work. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to sharpen your tactical and positional skills, I tailor my lessons to suit your level, goals, and learning style. Professionalism and patience are at the heart of my teaching. My focus is always on helping you gain confidence in your abilities, build a solid foundation, and see real progress in every game. My Approach to Tutoring Chess
I believe that learning chess should be fun, engaging, and tailored to each student’s goals and skill level. My approach is practical and hands-on. I focus on breaking concepts down into simple, easy-to-understand ideas that help you grow your game one step at a time.
Techniques & Methodology
I like to use a mix of guided puzzles, game analysis, opening principles, and tactical exercises to help you see the board more clearly. Together, we’ll review your games to identify strengths and areas for improvement. My style is encouraging and patient. I want you to feel comfortable making mistakes because that’s how you learn!
I also introduce classic chess strategies and fundamentals like:
- Basic openings and principles
- Common tactical patterns (forks, pins, skewers)
- Endgame techniques
- How to plan ahead and read your opponent’s intentions
Every session is tailored to your personal goals and progress, and I’ll leave you with homework or practice exercises if you’d like extra practice outside of lessons.
Typical Lesson Length
My lessons usually run for 60 minutes, which is a great balance between theory, practice, and reviewing your progress.
Qualifications & Experience
I’m a passionate chess player with over a decade of hands-on playing experience and a love for teaching others. My background in tutoring across different contexts — including as a mentor — means I know how to explain ideas clearly and adapt my style to suit different learning preferences.
