About Melissa
I am a recent university graduate with experience writing numerous social science research papers from a critical perspective. I received an Honours Bachelor of Arts (First-Class standing) from Dalhousie University in 2018, majoring in Sociology with a minor in Economics. Following my graduation, I was hired as an academic writing tutor for the university’s writing centre. I have tutored students from a diverse range of ages and academic backgrounds, from STEM subjects to creative writing majors. I also have an extensive background in social science research including data collection, methodology, and qualitative methods.

My teaching methodology includes working collaboratively with students in either one-on-one or small group settings. I work closely with students to determine what their learning goals are and tailor each class to achieve these outcomes. With that being said, the overarching objective of the tutoring appointment is always the same: to help you learn how to clearly and effectively communicate in academic writing. This includes discussing recurring grammatical mistakes, learning how to structure an essay, and making sure arguments are formulated clearly and concisely.
Each session takes place in a public space, such as a local library or café, and are typically 1-hour in length. A 1-hour appointment will improve an assignment’s grade, but several appointments over time would achieve long-term improvements in academic performance, written communication skills and critical thinking.
