About Jemma
I’m a passionate and approachable English tutor with extensive experience in teaching a variety of qualifications, including Entry Level, Functional Skills, and Cambridge IGCSE. Currently, I work in a specialist school for autistic learners, tailoring my approach to meet the unique needs of each student. Many of the learners I work with are also studying for AQA GCSE English Literature and Language, a specification I know well from my years of experience and work as an examiner.
My approach to teaching goes beyond academic success; I focus on building strong, supportive relationships with students. I create a safe, motivating environment where they can challenge themselves and develop both their confidence and skills in English. I believe in nurturing a genuine love for literature, and I stay connected to the world of books by running a book club and attending literary events in Cambridge.
As an AQA examiner, I bring valuable insight into the exam process, helping students meet the mark scheme’s requirements while staying true to their own voices in writing. Whether working with students who need to improve their exam technique or those seeking to reignite their interest in English, I tailor each lesson to their individual learning needs.

My lessons, available in one- or two-hour sessions, are carefully designed to be structured yet flexible, challenging yet supportive. Each begins with a check-in and a clear outline of our learning intention, followed by a low-pressure warm-up activity to engage and focus the mind. From there, we move into the core of the session, which is always tailored to the student’s needs and goals.
I support students working on a range of exam boards, but many of the learners I work with follow the AQA GCSE specifications. I have extensive experience with these texts and papers, and draw on my examiner expertise to offer targeted, practical support. Whether we’re developing analytical writing, revising key texts, or building exam technique, I guide students through each step with clear strategies and personalised feedback.
Texts I regularly teach include:
- Shakespeare ('Macbeth', 'Romeo and Juliet', 'Much Ado About Nothing')
- 19th-century fiction ('A Christmas Carol', 'The Sign of the Four')
- Modern drama ('An Inspector Calls')
- Poetry from the Power and Conflict and Love and Relationships clusters (AQA)
I also work with learners on Functional Skills and Entry Level qualifications, and I support Cambridge IGCSE students with both exam preparation and coursework guidance.
My lessons are known for being well-paced, purposeful, and responsive. I aim to help every student feel understood and empowered, using a blend of questioning, discussion, and high-quality resources. Many students who arrive feeling unsure about English leave with not only better grades, but a renewed sense of confidence and enjoyment in the subject.

Perfect! An excellent English tutor! Jemma is well organised and always prepares suitable, personalised materials to help improve our daughter’s English in KS3. Our daughter loves her teaching style and looks forward to every lesson. We are very happy with the progress and would highly recommend her.
- Amy's daughter is lovely to work with!Jemma's response :
Perfect! My son went from being predicted a 5 in English to being predicted a 7 within a term of starting these sessions. Jemma has been really organised to ensure the whole content has been covered in time for his exams. She has helped him make revision notes, kept us informed of his progress, and most importantly my son (who hates English) likes her and has been happy to go to the sessions. Highly recommend!
- Rachel's son is a fabulous student who works really hard.Jemma's response :

Perfect! Canmpt reccomend highly enough.
We are DELIGHTED with the tutoring Jemma has provided to our son. He previously found English a challenging subject and struggled to find any enjoyment from it. Jemma's experience shines - she understands how to interact with young people and challenge them without creating any pressure. She has that skill: of helping someone learn without making it an onerous task. Her approach has enabled our son's confidence to grow. I never thought I would see him enjoy English but he now does. He's predicted a very good mark in his GCSE's too! Thank you Jemma!- Lovely, polite young man. We have only had one lesson together but I hope to improve his language analysis and creative writing skills during our time together.Jemma's response :

Jemma supported my daughter with her English GCSEs and I honestly cannot recommend her highly enough. From the very beginning, she was incredibly knowledgeable, organised and supportive. As an experienced English teacher who has also marked GCSE exam papers, she was able to provide valuable insight into both the subject content and the best ways to approach exam questions and structure answers effectively.
Every lesson was carefully planned, with a clear timetable in place and thoughtful feedback provided afterwards. Jemma’s dedication and professionalism were evident throughout, but what really stood out was her ability to build such a positive rapport with my daughter. Jemma is an all-round English teacher with a rare gift for bringing out the best in students. She works exceptionally well with learners who start off hesitant or unsure of themselves. Through her patience, encouragement, and clear teaching style, I’ve watched her help many of them grow into confident, articulate speakers and writers.
