I adapt to each student's goals and expectations. If needed, I go through the university notes/exercices to reexplain the fundamentals. Most importantly, I attempt to be as clear as possible and to actively listen to the student's reasoning in order to quickly make sense of what he/she might need to better understand.
But coding is also fun; I give students interesting/challenging problems for them to explore and profoundly develop their coding muscles!
