About Calista

I have been working with elementary and middle school students for the past four years, gaining valuable experience and learning from many outstanding educators in both Wisconsin and Iowa. These experiences have strengthened my passion for teaching and supporting students in their academic growth.
I earned my bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with a K–8 reading license, as well as a master’s degree in Literacy Coaching and Reading Specialist. Through my training and experience, I have developed strong skills in leading small groups, providing one-on-one tutoring, and delivering whole-class literacy instruction. I value each of these settings because they allow me to meet students where they are and support their individual reading journeys.
One of the most rewarding parts of teaching is helping students reach that moment when learning “clicks.” As someone who struggled with reading in elementary school, I understand how important patience, encouragement, and engaging instruction are. It was a teacher who took the time to teach me in a new and meaningful way that made all the difference, and that experience continues to inspire my approach today.
I strive to create a supportive and engaging learning environment for my third-grade students, using strategies that build confidence and foster growth. I believe that reading is a process that takes time, and with patience, persistence, and the right support, all students can succeed.

About the lesson

I make reading engaging and enjoyable while supporting students through the challenges of learning to read and spell. I understand that there are many rules to learn and apply, which can feel overwhelming. My goal is to create a fun, low-stress environment where students feel confident and supported. I focus on teaching encoding and decoding skills using strategies that help students understand concepts in new and meaningful ways. Through games and connections to their interests, students stay engaged and often do not even realize how much they are learning.
