About Will
I’m an experienced Economics teacher and former Head of Department at a leading independent school in the UK. This experience has given me a strong understanding of what examiners are looking for and how students can make meaningful improvements to their grades.
I studied History & Politics at Trinity College Dublin before completing a Master’s in International Political Economy at the London School of Economics. Before becoming a teacher, I worked as a political aide in Parliament and as Managing Editor of an economic consulting firm.
When I’m not working I enjoy reading a good book/blog; sport and the outdoors, in particular exploring new mountains on both foot and skis; and travel, especially in the Spanish-speaking world.
Whether you are looking to improve your understanding of the subject, build confidence, or push towards the highest grades, I aim to make Economics both intellectually interesting and rewarding!

My lessons focus on the most important skill in Economics exams: turning your knowledge and understanding into high-scoring answers, particularly for longer-answer questions. My lessons therefore place a strong emphasis on exam technique, essay writing and practice questions.
We will work through questions together, identify where marks are being gained or lost, and develop clear strategies for tackling different question types. I particularly focus on helping students move beyond simply explaining economic theory towards producing the analytical and evaluative answers that examiners reward.
Lessons are tailored to the individual student. We can cover areas of the specification where you need to strengthen your understanding, work through data-response questions, practise longer essays under timed conditions, or prepare systematically for upcoming exams.
I teach both A-Level Economics (AQA and Edexcel) and IB Economics, and am happy to work with students from a range of starting points — whether you are looking to consolidate your understanding, move from a B to an A, or push towards an A*.

Will is an incredible teacher. He taught me Economics A-level for two years and showed a genuine enthusiasm for the subject. His teaching methods are thorough and effective, pushing me to achieve a A*. He also provided valuable insights into what economics encompasses as a broader field, which strengthened my desire to pursue it at university. Beyond his teaching, Will went above and beyond to help me with my university applications. I can confidently say he was a key factor in my acceptance to the University of Bath to study economics.
Will taught me for two years to an A* in A-Level Economics. He is super passionate, attentive, and kind. Could not recommend more.
I was fortunate enough to have Will as my A Level Economics teacher, and I can't recommend him highly enough. He's great at breaking down difficult concepts so they finally click, and tailors his teaching to how each student learns rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.
His support went beyond the classroom. He assisted me through the UCAS process, and I ended up with offers from all 5 of my UK choices, as well as several more in the USA, including USC and Emory. I achieved an A in A Level Economics, which I don't think would have happened without his guidance.
On top of being an excellent teacher, Will is a very approachable, patient, and personable person who's invested in his students' success. Anyone looking for an economics tutor would be in very good hands.I can highly recommend Will. He taught me IB Economics for two years and helped me achieve a 7, while also supporting me with my Extended Essay, for which I received an A. His guidance on my Personal Statement played a major role in helping me receive an offer from LSE, my first-choice university.
I thoroughly enjoyed being taught by Will O’Connell. His lessons were engaging, well‑planned and his passion for Economics helped spark my own interest in the subject, helping me to achieve an A at A‑Level and later, read Economics at Exeter University. He also provided invaluable support during my university applications, particularly with my personal statement. I couldn’t recommend Will more highly as a tutor.
I was taught A-Level Economics by Will O’Connell for two years and received an A* for the subject. He was an amazing teacher and instilled a love for economics in me, and our whole class. He has deep knowledge in the area and created an awesome learning environment which substantially contributed to the success of our class in Economics.
I had the pleasure of being taught A-Level Economics by Will O'Connell, and I highly recommend him to any student looking for reliable guidance. Will’s empathetic approach creates a comfortable environment where students feel supported to progress. He also helped me navigate my university applications, breaking down an overwhelming process into clear steps. His encouragement gave me the confidence I needed to excel, and I ultimately went on to graduate with a First. Will is engaging, caring, and truly invested in his students' success.
Will was my tutor, when I attended Gresham's school. Regardless of me not taking economics as a subject in high school, he inspired me to look into it and helped me with my application at the University of St.Gallen, Switzerland, where I am currently in my 5th semester. His genuine interest in everyone and his positive attitude towards taking opportunities was very inspiring and allowed me to grow as a person, academically and outside of school too.
Will is a brilliant teacher who really cares about his students and I would 100% recommend him to anyone. His teaching and guidance was the main reason I achieved an A in A-level economics and went onto study economics at the University of Bath! He also provided support with my university applications, offering expert advice and feedback throughout the process. It really helped having someone with his experience and knowledge helping me through a busy time.
Second to none subject knowledge!
I've worked alongside Will for five years, and he's a fantastic Economics teacher. He's experienced, well-qualified and knows his subject inside out. Every lesson is carefully planned around the individual student, and his students grow noticeably in confidence. I'd highly recommend him!
