About Luka

I've toured, played and supported numerous successful international acts around Australia and Tasmania, with various bands of diverse genres and for a few years short of a decade. I have now focused my work and sights on educating the young drummers, beginners and intermediates to further hone my proficiency and approach in the instructing world. My sincere wish is to share my skills and refined experiences in an effort to set a firm foundation for the future by building healthy + efficient habits for all styles and performances. My people and interpersonal skills from industry experience and also a strong and extensive background in customer service are next to none. Working with, and alongside people, almost rivals my passion for music. It is a pleasure and by no means work for me. Help me fulfill my dream by fulfilling yours first! Thank you for reading.

For beginners/intermediate levels of all ages. The lessons can be practical, theoretical, or a creative mix of both while we work on finding the best approach together. We can learn all tiers of covers from whatever genre you like to perhaps perform for a school talent quest, or even show off to the family at the next gathering; improv over video game music or movie scores (My Specialty!) even have excursions to recording/rehearsal studios for group lessons/jam sessions and record our sessions for later reflection and analysis. Everything will be determined and streamlined based on each individual as we all have nuanced approaches to learning and self-expression.

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

I developed my passion for music as a young child through video games and their respective soundtracks. My uncle happened to be a drummer and the only musician in all of my family, upon which I then gravitated toward an instrument after hearing him play. I was strongly drawn to the energy, power and expression of the percussive medium of music. It had then set me on a path of drumming that I've not once looked back from in 13 years.
  • Is there a particular type music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

There certainly are a handful, but the ones that I think stand out the most not just for me but many other people musical and non- would be C418 and Nobuo Uematsu in the VGM genre (Videogame Music) never gets old, always hits home. True virtuosic geniuses!
  • Explain to us the most difficult or 'riveting' lesson you could personally give to one of your students.

The most difficult or 'riveting' lesson I could muster, would be one where I invite a renowned drummer that is strongly praised by the student as a surprise special treat for encouragement and inspiration.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

I would have to say drums for multiple reasons; not just because I'm biased! Mechanically drumming has so many different techniques crucial to good/healthy execution in playing, so many fine and aggressive motor expressions, so much thinking and of course the fitness aspect is a reality for even the simplest performers at home and on the stage.
  • What are your keys to success?

Personally, I think if it brings you happiness and peace, you are already successful. Which means, in this case, interfacing with your instrument on your own healthy, regulated and sincere terms.

I believe defining success as something separate, grandiose and that is currently mutually exclusive to you; is starting off on the wrong foot. Like when people say "I'm trying" or "I'll try" .... you must do!

Language, especially self speak, is important!

Having said that, our goals, or ideas of "success" evolve with us, so if you keep striving and love the process, that would be my key to success. Simply put, "Gratitude"

With this formula in mind - as the great and brilliant drummer Chris Coleman says: "Success happens when preparation and opportunity meet" - you will see that your preparation, practice and determination will put you on the exact path of your wildest dreams, no matter how lofty, as long as you believe in yourself it's only a matter of time!
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

Miles Davis, Virgil Donati and Avishai Cohen would be my pick. Why you ask? To see the very fabric of time and space collapse on itself from the sheer and very magical weight of creative singularity.

Also, to see them all describe their processes, as I consider them important, brilliant and pioneering minds in the musical space.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your musical journey, or your days at 'music school'.

I was the worst drummer in my class on the first day. I simply couldn't grasp concepts yet. In one lesson almost everyone who played exceeded me in skill, understanding and performance. I spoke to my teacher after class (Thank You Ms Mayhew) and asked for a more catered and private explanation, upon which I had an epiphany and immediately exceeded the class. It's a very fond memory of mine, not for glory, but the value of a good teacher and listener which I truly aspire to be.
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I truly like to get to know my students and invest in their life. I adore people and their stories. Not everyone's a Superprof, but they certainly are teachers if one can only listen.
