About Helen
Languages played a huge role in my life. My mother came from Germany and settled in Scotland in 1949. She was my first German teacher and I learnt German much as I learnt English - context and repetition.
My first teacher at school was from Belgium and taught the whole class French. It was a village school and classes were combined ie Primaries 1,2 and 3 were in the same room and my teacher differentiated the learning materials. She was a wonderful example to me at a very early age on how to individualise learning materials and styles.
Learning had always been a positive experience for me and I particularly enjoyed putting my learning into practice. Such was my sense of achievement in this area that I determined early on to offer the same opportunity to other learners.

On average lessons last one hour but this time can easily be adjusted to individual needs.
A variety of media and stimuli are used in my lessons. Even though 3 languages are covered techniques and methodologies are transferable.
As a teacher I spent 25 years in a Scottish High School for pupils aged from 12-18 in preparation for SQA exams.
15 of those years were as a Head of Modern Languages where I had responsibility for the whole department's policies, strategies and methodologies.
For the past 10 years I have offered online classes in all of the above subjects. One pupil aged 40 studied ESOL with me and rose from a Level B1 to a Level C1 on the CEFR scale. He succeeded in graduating with a degree in Environmental Studies written entirely in English. Others rose from A2 to C1. My eldest pupil is 80 years old and my youngest is 8!
