About Isaac
My name is Isaac and I am currently completing a degree in Mathematics and another one in Communication. I was homeschooled and was mostly self taught for mathematics, and I understand how it feels to struggle with understanding mathematical concepts. Whilst I do not have a PhD in math (yet), my experience in teaching and mathematical writing (3 years) makes me the best tutor to communicate ideas so the student fully understands the concepts.
I am looking for students between the ages 14-18 who are mature and are currently struggling with Algebra, Calculus, or Pre-Calculus. It is preferred that they have both an external and internal motivation to understand mathematical concepts, not just memorize formulas and pass exams. I will NOT teach geometry, statistics, or probability theory as they are very different fields (although depending on the needs of the student this can be excused).

These are some keypoints of my lesson structure:
- I emphasise understanding over memorizing. But have developed methods so students can memorize the needed formulas for exams IF necessary. It is better if the student can fully derive the concept from scratch or a basic set of assumptions then blindly memorize and move onto more complicated subjects which (in a few years) will collapse the student, and s/he will find themselves unable to understand these things due to a weak foundation.
- Review is integral to the learning process. Some students have (understandably) been a bit irritated that we cover the same concepts a lot, but this is important. Not only does it develop long term memory retrieval but the student NEEDS to get a good grounding of the calculations of mathematics, not just the concepts.
-Failure is important. If a student has never failed to solve a problem, then they haven't tried. In other words, I ensure that the student moves on to concepts WHEN THEY ARE READY. Some students are behind and some are ahead, but we need to reach the point where they start to fail questions, because that is where they need to focus their strength.
