About Claire

I bring a sense of humor and a fresh, perhaps eccentric, take on Shakespeare to my Shakespeare Monologue work. Though my foundation as an Actor and Coach is in Shakespeare Technique, my approach is all about CHARACTER and STORY. The Language and it's rules are a clever short cut into the Character and How to Play them. Deepening the Actors imagination, personal connection with the circumstances Shakespeare has presented--their unique DELIVERY of the "words, words, words," and, above all, having fun and falling in love with your Speech and Shakespeare---This is how my service stands out!

'The Monologue' is like a short Story, but how to tell it? “Ay there’s the rub!” Who are these people! We are closer to these Characters than we think. And, good news, it’s all in the TEXT, what a relief! The challenge lies in understanding WHAT IS BEING SAID, WHAT THE STORY ACTUALLY IS... THEN HAVING AS MUCH FUN AS YOU POSSIBLY CAN WITH IT. Like I said, each Monolouge is itself a short Story (or Play), with a beginning, middle, and end---or (even more specific) a Thesis statement, defended/ explained, and then concluded. Once this backbone is understood, then the real fun begins: The DELIVERY. This is where YOU come in. How YOU deliver this Speech has never been seen or heard before— YOUR DELIVERY is why we keep coming back to see Hamlets and Juliets, we’ve never seen yours! My work is to guide the Actor through a speech, find THEIR DELIVERY (what the speech means to them), pull the Character out of the Actor and then, all of sudden, PORTIA is in the room, HOTSPUR is alive and well, and The Human Condition is an ART. — “Speak the speech I pray you...” Hamlet urges The Players, “...hold, as 'twere, the mirror up to nature, to show virtue her own feature, scorn her own image, and the very age and body of the time his form and pressure.”

MY EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: I have Shakespeare training from the British American Drama Academy in London. Taught by leading Shakespearean Teachers, here is where I fell in love with Shakespeare. I received my MFA in Acting from the New School for Drama in NYC. Upon graduation I received the BOB HOPE AWARD FOR COMEDY. While there, I excelled in Shakespeare, playing Rosalind, Imogen, Cleopatra, and Rosaline. My final year I developed O HAPPY DAGGER, my ONE-Woman adaptation of Romeo & Juliet, which I later performed in the New York New Works Theatre Festival. My affection and fascination with Shakespeare's Characters and Stories has encouraged a kind of dedication to the work I didn’t imagine I was capable of—creating three solo Shakespeare plays, performing up to 60 minutes of Shakespeare and up to 8 characters at a time. While putting these one-woman acts up, I’ve played almost every Shakespeare character I’ve ever wanted with Stag & Lion Shakespeare Company up town and have been in three seasons of HBOmax’s SEARCH PARTY as the recurring “happy-go-lucky” character JUNE.

Hearing a Speech I've heard a million times before in a way I've never heard it! Every Actor brings something new and exciting to these Characters I've come to know very well-- and it is so much fun! I'm always getting my mind blown, learing and growing as an Actor, most excitingly, as a person while working with Shakespeare and others. I couldn't ask for a richer more enjoyable experience.

It was natural!  It became a request from Actors and Teachers who's forte wasn't Sheakspeare.  My Solo Shakespeare plays out me in the position of being asked to coach because I play multiple characters and have a well rounded, innate understanding of STORYTELLING. I have an enthusiasm and fascination with Shakespeare that is contagious.

MFA in Acting from The New School for Drama. One college year of Shakespeare study with The British American Drama Academy in London.  Five years summer Shakespeare with Stag & Lion Shakespeare Company Upper West Side NYC. Three Solo OFF-OFF BROADWAY Shakepeare Plays (ROMEO&JULIET, THE TAMING OF THE SHREW, COMEDY OF ERRORS) playing multiple characters and telling whole story in either 30 or 60 minutes.

When training in London I was inspired by how each of my teachers spoke about Shakespeare's Characters as if they knew them and yet each time someone got up to perform a Speech it was as if they were meeting the Character for the first time. I became enchanted with this concept and feeling of being delightfully carried away by each new interpretation while being rooted in know who the Character is. We will always see different ROSALINDS, but her Character will stay the same, someone close to our hearts yet ever changing before our very eyes. My admiration for these Characters, ingrained from my time in London, is what led me to performing my One-Woman Adaptations of Shakespeare Plays.

The Actor bring's in a Shakespeare monologue (new or old) to work on OR we can find one Speech together.  The piece could be for a specific audition or just one for your back pocket! If the Actor is familiar with Shakespeare Technique or not we'll go over what we know about "DOING SHAKESPEARE"!!! We'll discuss The Story in the Speech and how the Language tells us WHO this Character is and explore what it all means to YOU THE ACTOR.  Dig through your Imagination and ask you to enter the Character's Story.  Then throw YOU out of the way so you can live in the Imagination of the Character and THEIR Story.  It takes a certain surrender to WONDER.  These Characters are larger than life, courageous, intelligent (they know exactly what to say and how to say it), dangerous, quick, and graceful... When we work together I'll explain how WONDER is a signifcant quality to embrace. Shakespeare is funny, bawdy, ruthless, wise... HUMAN...its everything juicy, awkward and true about people. If you can bring a sense of WONDER with you--everything else will fall into place.

THE AUDITION: If the Actor is truly keyed into the Story the Character is just how the Story is told, and the Audition is just a chance to tell the Story.  Give this Character a Voice, it needs you.

Actors! All ages, new and old to Shakespeare.  Sometimes we just need a way into a Speech--everyone can relate to that, HOW TO DO I BEGIN? But it's not the HOW, it's the WHY!!! Why do you begin speaking, WHY?

"To thine own self be true." Find someone you know you feel safe exploring your Speech with, most importantly, yourself with.  Monologue work can be a volnorable experience, especially SHAKESPEARE MONLOGUE WORK! Monologues take time and care, it's important to work with someone you feel you can go on a personal journey with. I say PERSONAL because... it is personal in my opinion. And SHAKESPARE is, frankly, difficult and daunting at times so my advice is be sure you're working with someone you can have fun with... if you aren't having fun working with Shakespeare then... your MISSING IT!

Being asked to perform a five minute piecing of HAMLET at The Players Club in Gramercy for a Playwrights Horizons event. Hired by ALAINE ALLDAFFER, CD of Playwrights, who said I have Shakespeare in my bones.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I think it's enough to know you want a teacher or coach.  We can figure the rest out from there.
