About Robert

It makes me excited to see that I can help the special spark emerge from the actor themselves. That was there already inside themselves. The power that come from their own self belief. And a joy that comes from working on their craft

I began teaching at the Gushee Studio in NYC under the direction of Phil Gushee (formerly of the Neighborhood Playhouse). Mr. Gushee also directed me in plays in the company we founded together called Black Sheep Repertory Theater.

I received a scholarship to the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in NYC and later studied at the Neighborhood Playhouse with Sanford Meisner. I then proceeded to have a ten year career in professional theater in NYC and in t.v.

I teach the method that I studied at the Neighborhood Playhouse with Sanford Meisner and later with Phil Gushee privately. The object of which is to free the actor to rely on their instincts and learn to listen which is the basis for truthful behavior on stage. Emphasis is placed on exerices such as the repetition technique, followed by scene and character study.

All types. There is no pre-requisite other than the students desire to learn a craft that is both mysterious and practicable. Some have been working actors, some have never been in an organized production of any kind. What I teach is not difficult conceptually. But takes a life time of dedication to master. As is true of any art form. The more one learns the more one becomes aware of oneself and the potential for learning and growing. The journey is the process and the actor is always a work in progress.

I would ask them questions. Where have they studied? What is their philosophy about the craft of acting? How do  they structure their classes, or sessions? What is the object of the training? What is the goal of the lessons. Both in the short and long term. And would encourage the actor to share their own goals so the teacher can gain greater insight into what they hope to achieve

A recent event I enjoyed was seeing a production of the revival of the play a Soldier's Play on Broadway. The production was very much an ensemble effort. Which is always thrilling in the theater. That actors living in the moment and sharing it with each other and the audience. This is the most thrilling aspect of live theater.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
The student should think about the fundamental reason they want to study. That reason should most definitely centered on what zen philosophers have described as the "right effort." A  commitment to goals that encompasses a larger vision for themselves, and not on the materialistic. If the student is looking for a short-cut to sucess rather than a willingess to dedicate themselves to disciplines that will challenge and ultimately lead them to a deeper satisfaction. And gain access to parts of themselves they didn't think possible then they're on the right track.
