About Matt
My instruction in improvisation, acting, and comedic performance is informed by my ongoing professional work in those fields. I am a member of SAG-AFTRA, a graduate of Chicago's Second City Conservatory, and am passionate about giving students wanting to enter the entertainment business real training, solid skills, and reliable information about how to translate them from the studio into real life.
MATT GEILER is a comedian, artist, and musician with a passion for making people laugh.
A virtuoso musical improviser and freestyle rapper, Matt’s live appearances are completely off-the-cuff concerts of hilarious songs made up from audience suggestions. He’s toured and performed his solo show #MakeMattSING! all over the country and is frequently added to live dates by Wayne Brady who calls Matt “The Beast” and “one of the smartest, funniest performers I’ve had the joy of performing with.”
Matt’s television and film work includes hosting Misguided Tours and What’s In My Pocket? as well as featured comedic performances on America’s Got Talent, The Comedy Show Show, Social Etiquette, and Pit Boss His latest big-screen appearance was as sleazy Hollywood hustler G alongside Cedric Yarbrough (Speechless) in Brian Burton’s The Chauffeur, which screened at Tribeca.
Besides his comedy work, Matt is also a sought-after voice-over artist and is legitimately Internet-famous as the Dancing Pumpkin Man meme that signals the arrival of Halloween every year.
When he’s not performing, Matt writes, records, and produces music for his indie-pop project Frederick Julius and is also a professional illustrator of several children’s books, including his own A Bright House and The Adventures Of Edison Matthews.
I love teaching students of all ages how to improvise because its applications have a reach far beyond the demands of an acting or performing career. Good improvisers are fluid and agile thinkers, creative problem solvers, and embrace change in an open and dynamic way. Developing that part of people while laughing and learning to listen to your own instincts and cultivate your voice is an immense reward for everyone.
Since teachingmy first improv workshops for students at the Omaha Community Playhouse in 2000, I have taught hundreds of classes and workshops for elementary, high school, and college students, corporate clients, and at improv festivals around the country.
In addition, I have worked on various tv and live projects coaching talent in improvisation and comedic performance.

In a student's initial lesson/class, I find out their performing history - particularly their experience in improvisation and ask quite a bit about what they'd like to get out of the class. Finding out this information up front helps me tailor the exercises to them so that they're getting necessary and quality instruction that's also individualized.

The best instruction comes from teachers who are both passionate about the subject and who have real-world experience that informs that instruction. When your improvisation training comes from professional performers/comedians who have worked in television, film, and stage because of their skill level, you're receiving a degree of insight and expertise beyond the usual improv class offering.
One of my favorite places to teach is the Chicago Musical Improv Festival. I get to teach my favorite mode of improvisation to students from all over the country.

Matt has a natural way of connecting with students and getting them to step outside their comfort zone. One minute they will be apprehensive to perform and the next minute they will be singing and dancing to a 20 minute improvised musical! Matt is tons of fun! I highly recommend!

Details
Sessions are organized and billed as follows:
Intro to Improvisation (8 weeks): Each weekly 3-hour workshop introduces students to basic improvisation and performing prinicples through games and exercises and prepares them to perform simple improvised scenes, solo and with partners. This class culminates with a student performance. $275
Intermediate Improvisation (8 weeks): Builds on and strengthens students' basic improvisation skills, using each weekly 3-hour workshop to develop scene/partner work, improvised characters, comedic voice, scene structure, and using improvisation to create scripted material. Culminates with a student performance. $275
Advanced Improvisation (8 weeks): Experienced performers and improvisers use each weekly 3-hour workshop to strengthen their skills, engage in detailed character work, high-level game play, and applications of comedy theory with an emphasis on refining original material. Culminates with a student performance. $275
Musical Improvisation (8 weeks): Experienced improvisers learn the fundamentals of musical improvisation and comedic songwriting through exercises and games. Culminates in a student performance. $275
Individual Instruction (1 hr): Top-level one-on-one improvisation instruction and performance consultation. $35
