About Caroline
I am a career scientist with a background in biochemistry and molecular biology. A big part of my job involves teaching students and training fellow scientists and I love it!
I have worked as a high school math tutor and have TA'd college courses in cell and molecular biology. I am new to the professional tutoring world, but love teaching and hope to foster an enthusiasm for science and math in future generations of students!
I can tutor high school biology and chemistry, as well as pre-algebra, algebra, and geometry.
Science is not a subject that comes naturally to everyone. But that shouldn't make it inaccessible. I think my service stands out in that I work hard to identify how each student learns and how to help them achieve their goals. Tutoring in science should extend beyond course material and will involve approaches to reasoning and problem-solving that will help students in any academic field.
I started teaching when I worked as a high school math tutor in college and I loved it! One of my favorite parts of research is learning new things and training others, so I have been able to incorporate teaching into my career.
I have a BA in Biochemistry with college honors from Earlham College, and a MSc in Molecular Biology from the University of Basel, Biozentrum. I have TA'd college courses in cell biology, molecular biology, and analytical chemistry. My work experience has also involved training incoming scientists so teaching has been a consistent part of my work.

With a new student, I first establish a sense of learning style. What type of exercise and training is going to help my student master the subject area? I like to establish a rapport with my student so that they feel comfortable letting me know when they are struggling with a subject matter or when an approach I am using isn't helping them. I like to equip my students with the vocabulary they need to ask questions, and I take time to get to know how to match my teaching to an individual's pace and needs.
I have worked with high school and college students as well as incoming graduate students.
I would encourage you to find someone who teaches you to 'think like a scientist'. Not only do you need to master the subject material, science involves problem solving and analytical thinking and honing these skills will help you master any subject area.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Try to identify themes that you find challenging. Often it isn't the subject material that a student struggles with, it's the presentation of that material. Looking for types of problems or categories of information that a student finds difficult to master can help a teacher learn what types of alternative approaches might help that student succeed.

Since I am new to professional tutoring, I can tutor on a sliding scale. I am currently charging $20 per hour but I am willing to negotiate price and time to match student needs.
