About Jesse

I have been studying chess for nearly ten years. It has become a passion of mine as well as a hobby, and a pastime. I also think it has been an incredible tool for developing a growth mindset. I wish more people were as familiar with this wonderful game as they are with pop stars and video games. I want more people to love chess the way I do. That is why I Tutor.

I mostly teach beginners (those who are not yet FIDE rated) and my focus is on three main facets of growth for those I teach:

1. Self-improvement

– Going from little Chess theory, to entering (maybe even winning) chess tournaments

– It is also beneficial when students feel the fulfillment of learning even in times when improvements feel minor incrementally

2. Critical thinking

– It is especially important in Chess (and in life) to make decisions with a future-focused mindset rather than reacting emotionally. This is my main focus as a tutor.

3. Sportsmanship

– of course Chess, as a gentleman's (or gentlewoman's) sport, is more than just a game of competition. It is also important to be refined in your interactions with your opponents.

Chess is an ideal vector to teach these core principles to anyone who is willing to learn. Becoming a better chess player is a process but it is a fulfilling journey. I aim to catalyze the learning process and to help beginners become tournament ready. While becoming better individuals along the way.

The following is a list of chess studies that I have studied and teach:

Rules, piece values, board dynamics, tactics, strategies, Theory, openings, endgame analysis, and managing the clock are all available to learn from our tutors.

I started teaching my wife and her friends when they wanted to learn and I realized I didn't have time to teach as a favor anymore.

I eventually reached out to a local high school to help with their chess club and from there I started getting parents asking me to teach their kids.

I find it important to understand why the student want to learn Chess and what the end goal is for learning. That way we can work together to help them progress toward what they want to learn rather than what I want to teach.
So a goal assessment sheet is filled out and then we play a game to see where the starting point ought to be for our lessons.

Mostly children. Nearly all of my students have been between the ages of 10 and 18. Although I do not mind teaching anyone older. In fact, I enjoy making friends with the older students.
