About Madlen
Madlen is a teacher and performer of Oriental (belly) dance, based in Louisville, Kentucky. Madlen has always been drawn to movement: she began dancing ballet, tap, and jazz as a child, before moving on to gymnastics, figure skating, martial arts, horseback riding, yoga, and pilates. She began studying belly dance in college, and has since studied with a number of international dance artists, including Karim Nagi, Athena Najat, and Suhaila Salimpour.
Madlen has performed throughout the region at colleges, private parties, restaurants, lounges, and festivals. She has been described as having “a quiet and strong style that mesmerizes those who watch her.” She loves the improvisational nature of Oriental dance and getting lost in live music.
As a teacher, Madlen is intuitive and gentle, encouraging each dancer on their personal journey. Madlen’s classes are focused on building the muscles needed for dance, as well as exploring cultural context, introducing rhythms, and encouraging respect for the art form. Her classes are body-positive and welcoming to dancers of all ages, shapes, and fitness levels. Anyone can dance!
My first belly dance teacher, Ruric-Amari, encouraged me to begin teaching beginner classes at her studio in 2010. I've been teaching ever since, including beginner and advanced classes, as well as choreography and prop workshops.
I have 12 years of experience in Arabic dance, with over a decade of experience in teaching. I've taken with teachers locally, as well as with some of the best dance teachers internationally. I have a profound respect for the culture of the dance, and always try to honor that culture in everything that I do. Study and practice are the cornerstones of my work. As a teacher, I take great joy in the accomplishments of my students, from big to small. I love celebrating your victories with you!

All kinds! My youngest students have been in middle school, my oldest students are in their retirement years. I've worked with all levels of dancers and a range of styles.
Make sure the teacher has experience, and a respect for Arabic culture. A lot of belly dance teachers begin teaching classes very soon after they begin dancing, and a lot of teachers focus on fusion belly dance instead of traditional styles. I think the cornerstone of a good dance education should be culture and technique, before fusion props and music.
Recently I danced at the Twinkle Hafla in Newport Kentucky, a regional dance show organized by Emily Marie of Cincinnati. It was a joy to see so many dedicated belly dancers sharing their passion in one place! I love sharing the stage with dancers who feel as strongly as I do.

Pricing for private lessons is the regional standard of 45 - 60 dollars per hour, which is the regional standard. Pricing for private lessons depends on your goals, and whether or not you're studying with me outside of private lessons.
