About David

I offer personalized English writing and reading tutoring to fit your needs. Over the past 15 years, I've taught every age group from kindergarten to adults, the majority of my students being teenagers. I do not use a set curriculum to tutor--I individualize all my lessons to help you improve in areas you want to improve in. I can supplement your current school curriculum and help with assignments, or we can work parallel to what you're doing in school. Alternatively, I have a passion for creative writing, and I would love to work with you on pet projects of yours to make them successful!

Are you a parent who's now been tasked with homeschooling your child during the COVID-19 pandemic? Let me help! I can suggest materials for you to use at home and supplement your instruction with my own.

I have a Masters Degree in Teaching English from Smith College and 15 years of teaching in public and private schools. I have lots of experience working with students with learning disabilities, including ADHD, dyslexia, and executive functioning disorders. Whatever your needs are, I can work with you and help you achieve your reading and writing goals!

My first experiences teaching were at Massachusetts Audubon day camps when I was in high school, and it was there that I fell in love with helping students learn new things! After college, I taught third grade in Arkansas through Teach For America, and I've been in classrooms ever since.

I taught with Teach For America right out of college, and I later earned a Masters Degree in Teaching English from Smith College. I have 15+ years of teaching experience in everything from kindergarten to high school to college to adults.

If we work together, the first thing we will do is decide on your goals. Are you looking for extra help with school? Supplementary material to go above and beyond, or to slow down and make sure you don't fall behind? Do you simply enjoy learning and want to improve your skills in certain areas? Once we articulate your goals, we will decide on a plan of action to get you there in a pain-free way!

The list is almost too long to include! I've worked with all ages from kindergarten to high school to college students to adults. I've worked with many students with learning differences, privileged and under-privileged students, and many in subject areas outside of English. Right now, apart from tutoring, I help incarcerated adults earn their high school degrees--which goes to show that you never know where life will take you :)

The most important thing in a tutoring relationship is the match. People communicate and learn in different ways, and not all personalities work well together. I offer my first lesson half price so you can see if we're a good match. If not, I hope you'll feel comfortable saying so and finding a tutor who does work for you.

The current men I work with are learning high school skills, and many of them have learning disabilities and low academic self-esteems. Each time one of them earns his high school equivalency, however, or even improves his score on a test or recognizes a new skill he's learned, you can see a part of him light up and begin to believe in himself.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
If you already know your academic goals, that's very helpful. If not, we can get there by talking through what you're being asked to do at school and what you hope to be able to do to make yourself marketable in the future. Basically, my job as a tutor is to find out where you want to go, where you are now, and then develop a plan for getting from A to B. If you already know some of that information, it will help me get you there quickly!

My standard rate for digital tutoring is $30/hour. If your budget does not allow this, please reach out to me and we will find a price that works for both of us. I understand that these are tough times financially for many people, but no child's education should suffer because of that.
