About Valerie

My goal is to help students become more confident and capable in the classroom. Whether this means helping with test preparation or improving written assignments, I focus on a student's strengths and build a foundation of learning.

I graduated magna cum laude from UCLA in 2018 with a degree in psychobiology. Throughout K-12 schooling and college, I was a well-rounded student that earned top grades in all subjects. I have always had a passion for learning, and spent time researching the process of learning in college. My aim is to now help other students learn how to learn.

I am able to teach all elementary and middle school core subjects, as well as most high school subjects. My main areas of expertise are Biology, Math (up to Trigonometry), English, History, and Psychology. Additionally, I have played the flute for 14 years and can provide basic music education or more advanced technique on the flute. I have over 6 years of experience working with youth in various counseling and tutoring positions, and aim to be a youth psychologist in the future.

The school environment is constantly changing and requiring so much more of our students. I want to help students become confident learners so that they can handle anything school throws at them.

I've been teaching in some capacity since I was in high school. I started by providing flute lessons for younger students that couldn't afford private professional teachers. In college, I worked with several afterschool programs tutoring elementary school students. I love getting to share knowledge with younger students and watch as they grow more confident and capable in their abilities.

About the lesson

I first determine what the student might be struggling with. Oftentimes students are experiencing some anxiety around test taking or assignments, they don't know the best way to study, or they don't have solid foundational knowledge of the subject we are focusing on.

As we work through any larger issues, I also help the student complete any immediate assignments or needs. The goal is to keep moving along while helping the student build skills and tools for the future.

My biggest goal is to help students realize they aren't bad at any one subject; they just need a better approach and more practice.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What are the skills (not subjects) you struggle with in school? Each subject requires a slightly different combination of skills - writing, reading, memorizing, etc. If there is a skill you are not yet proficient at, it could slow you down no matter how much you go over the subject material. Tell your teacher what skills you want to get better at in addition to your specific coursework.

Are you able to adapt your teaching style if it doesn't seem to match my learning style? Learning is a unique process for everyone. You want to find a teacher that picks up on what works and what doesn't work for you so that you learn effectively and efficiently. Getting a one-on-one teacher is your chance to receive education tailored to your needs. It shouldn't feel like a lecture or classroom-wide lesson.
