About Lou
When the student says, "Wow! I never thought of that!" after I suggest a technique to pronounce English sentences and words, I light up.
People often can't hear the sounds they create when they talk. They don't hear themselves the way others hear them. For whatever reason -- a mental block, lack of listening experience in their target language, etc. -- many people simply can't hear why their accent is different than a native English speaker, they just "know" that it is.
I'm able to articulate to the student the physical sensations of speech; how the tongue is shaped in English versus your language, whether the sound passes the teeth or the lips. These are all things that most people don't think about.
My students and I have fun together. They're so appreciative of the information they're getting. It's very gratifying.
I had already been teaching singing, acting, voiceover and various musical instruments. I was curious then to see if (a) I had a knack for accent reduction teaching and, (b) to see if anyone was interested in my approach.
Soon after, I developed a clientele and discovered that I really enjoyed it.
I've been a professional musician most of my life. I have a conservatory degree as a classical orchestral musician.
I'm also an improvisational instrumental player and a singer who has spent his life listening to sounds, interpreting those sounds, and then reproducing them. That happens to be exactly the same process a person goes through when they try to modify their accent.
My family and I are immigrants (former Yugoslavia; I was born in Germany), so, English was not my first language. Serbian, Croatian and English were spoken in our home. I also was an altar boy in a Russian Orthodox church.
My musical ear along with my musical training make me keenly aware of the nuance of peoples' speech patterns, things that students are often unaware of. I'm also a voice actor. Part of my skill set is to do accents, including foreign accents.
I was mentored in accent reduction by Lisa Mojsin, the author of Mastering the American Accent, published by Barron Books. I worked with her on creating an audio version of that book, producing and engineering the project, and performing voice readings.

We'll sit together and have a conversation. For instance, I'll ask them about themselves while I take notes. I'll listen for patterns in their speech -- Do they mix up singulars an plurals? Do they over-pronounce words or put the syllable accents in odd places? -- then ask them to pause while I point out what I've noticed.
I've worked with non-native English speakers who were simply interested in being better understood by their American co-workers. I've worked with people who didn't want to be thought of as less than competent because their accents, and others who were just bothered that they had an accent at all.

Generally, for self-paying individuals, the fees are $35 for 30 minutes, $45 for 45 minutes and $70 for 60 minutes.
