About Ellen

I have over 25 years of experience as a licensed, certified English teacher and school counselor. I help students with a wide range of English course content, including reading comprehension, essay and creative writing, public speaking and ESL. In my role as a counselor, I have a record of success helping students select, apply and gain admission to college. Finally, I have training and experience teaching English to foreign students and adults.

I love being able to instill a "Can Do" attitude in people who are discouraged about their ability to read, write and speak English well. My greatest pleasure is watching my students gain self-confidence as their skills steadily improve.

I was a young wife with a degree in English and a husband in law school.  My best opportunity for a job was as an English teacher, so that's what I became.  Very soon I realized it was a job I loved!

I attended Cornell University, where I was an honors English student, and I earned my master's degree from the University of Pennsylvania. My training as an ESL tutor was done through Literacy Volunteers of America.

I spend time getting to know a new student so that I understand the kind of help he or she is seeking.  We discuss the student's goals, and I offer suggestions on the best way to achieve those goals.

I've worked with students of all ages, but especially middle, high school and college students, as well as adults.  I've tutored essay writing, English course work, ESL and public speaking.  My students have been enrolled in basic, standard and honors level classes.  As a counselor, I've guided hundreds of students with varying academic records in their college search. I also tutor foreign students enrolled in American schools as well as adult immigrants who do not attend school but want to learn English.

Experience matters, but so does personality.  Find someone who "clicks" with you, someone with enthusiasm who encourages you to succeed.  Even if the work itself seems difficult or overwhelming, you should look forward to tutoring sessions with a teacher who can make things better!

I've been working with a young mother from Brazil and her seven-year-old son.  The boy repeated first grade and was not making good progress with his reading.  Recently, though, he's been doing much better.  I was tutoring him when it was time to leave the library.  He continued to read while putting on his jacket and then insisted on standing by my chair in his coat and hat while he finished reading the book to me. His enthusiasm warmed my heart and put a huge smile on his mom's face!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Each student has his or her own needs, of course, but in general, all students should think about not only what they want to learn but also how they feel.  It's important for a tutor to know if students are feeling discouraged or alienated in school or in relation to the subject they are trying to master. Students should think about the full range of support they need and share that information with the tutor.
